Stuff turns up on eBay once in a while, but I'm very skeptical about the
authenticity of such items. People are always selling miscellaneous
household knickknacks and claiming there were used on some famous TV show or
other. When you ask them to point out a specific episode in which the item
can be seen on screen, they never have a satisfactory answer. And don't put
any stock in a "certificate of authenticity," they're absolutely worthless.
Anyone who would make up a lie about where they obtained an item would not
hesitate to print up a phony certificate to go with it (there's been fake
cards printed up too -- watch out for the old "fake card" dodge). A couple
of years ago, a revolver that was said to have been used by Don Knotts on
The Show sold for something like $3,500. It MIGHT have been genuine, but it
looked to me like a plain old gun somebody found in a box of junk somewhere.
Not too long ago someone sold one of Andy's original badges, and I'm
convinced that it WAS the genuine article. The seller explained in detail
how Andy had invited him to the set, and the auction included several
behind-the-scenes photos. There's no way those could have been faked.
