Tim, have you ever seen Full Metal Jacket? It is not a family friendly movie in the least; with lots of profanity and graphic violence. But R. Lee Ermey portrays a Marine Drill Instructor during Viet Nam and my Marine husband says it is the closest to real Marine boot camp he has seen in a movie. Ermey was a drill instructor in real life in the 1960s, and served in Viet Nam. In a related side note, there is a real fat body recruit in FMJ. He can't run, climb and is a general waste of DI time. Ermey's character nicknames him "Private Pyle". "Private Pyle" is played by Vincent D`Onofrio who is now on Law and Order CI. You are right, Ermey would have been a great Sgt. Carter. I once read a quote from Jim Nabors and I will paraphrase. He said he often thought of the Marines in the GPUSMC opening who marched with him. He said most of them went to Viet Nam and never made it home. He said he often compared himself, who was just making a TV show and the Marines who died for their country. Shows the depth and the actor of the man.
