As the color episodes have been running recently on TVLand,
I got to thinking about a few things. One, to quiet my bias toward
only the B&W episodes. There are real gems in the "color years"!
And although I'm one who thinks the show had a different feel and
flavor in its later years, it is still classic TV and I can't help but watch.
Isn't that a sign of a great story....you just can't it down even though
you know how it comes out?

I also got to thinking about Miss Crump and Opie's education at
Mayberry. Its interesting, don't you agree, that Helen remained
Opie's teacher up through the years? I wonder if he and the other
children were well served by having the same teacher year after year?
I suspect there would be many advantages....not unlike the one room
country school people romantically recall. (and I attended)
The teacher really gets to know her/his students and knows how to
reach them and motivate them.

Of course there could be disadvantages if you had a poor teacher
year after year.....what did Barney and Andy call one of their teachers,
"the monster up on 4th floor".?...something like that....

Mayberry was hardly a one room school.....yet she always seemed to
be Opie's teacher. Now I suppose its possible, she was his "home room"
teacher in those later years, and he really did have other teachers, but
I don't recall any others. I would have to think Opie and his classmates
were well served by a dedicated and caring educator who taught more
than the curriculum called for. May we all have such caring and professional
teachers. Your thoughts please.
