Opie's mother is mentioned in a few episodes (such as The New Housekeeper, Ellie Comes to Town, and Wedding Bells for Aunt Bee) but we're never told her name or how she died. As for the photo in the Taylor home, believe it or not, that's a photo of Frances Bavier, probably taken around 1920.
