I have to say I may be one of the few who really enjoys the color episodes.
I would not go so far as to say they are a favorite, but I do enjoy them
very much. I think the color episodes took on more realistic story lines
that portrayed a little more accurately what small town Americana was really
like. Rather than writing stories which emphasized the humorous, they
dealt with more serious themes while still being able to include humor.
Aunt Bee's and Andy's learning the truth about Grandpa Seth Taylor, Helen
and Andy's difficulty when Helen had success with her book, Opie's conflict
when writing about the Battle of Mayberry, Opie's destruction of Aunt Bee's
Prize Rose, Aunt Bee wanting to learn to drive and Andy being against it.
There are a lot more, but I think you get what I mean. As you watch the
episodes progress you can see a definite change in characters. At the
beginning they were all very "hickish" with strong accents and more
"uneducated speech use", but as the show progress the accents were dropped
along with the use of the many various localized speech patterns. By the
time the color episodes were into their second year, Mayberry could easily
have been any small town in any state. Well, that's what I think, but what
do I know. I'm a "Northerner."
