A new retirement high-rise building is under construction in Eau Claire. It
will be nine stories, and some units will sell for as much as $1 million.
It is located along side the busiest highway in the city. What a contrast to
being able to retire in Mayberry. In a few weeks I will be entering my sixth
decade of life, and although I hope to stay in my home for many more years,
I do think about what kind of retirement home I might enjoy having.

It got me wondering why some developer hasn't come up with a plan for a
place called "Mayberry Retirement Community". It could be located off a
main highway, and the homes would be nice affordable one and two bedroom
cottages, each with a front porch and garden plot. There could a small Main
Street of businesses which could include a barber shop and beauty parlor,
with perhaps a manicurist, a friendly diner, and of course with retirees,
there would need to be a drug store, complete with a soda fountain. A movie
theatre could be there too, and it would show classic movies that we have
all come to love. There would be need for only one small two pump gas
station.

The community could have one security officer, and his office could be
right next door to the barber shop. Of course he would not have to wear a
gun, seeing it is Mayberry Retirement Community. The community could elect
a council among the residents. They could handle any disputes, and create any
ordinances what would be needed.

There could be a small park with a gazebo for Sunday evening concerts. A
non-denominational church could be included, where people of all faiths
could join together in worship and song. Just on the edge of the Mayberry
Retirement Community would be a small duck pond, stocked with perch,
bluegills, and perhaps, pardon the pun, some "rock bass".

Can you imagine how wonderful a place this could be for one's retirement?
It would be a safe haven where all the residents would be free to take
leisurely walks in the evening. On Sundays, all the businesses would shut
down, so if anyone wanted a bottle of pop, you would have to take a walk to
the gas station. Somehow, I think I would prefer living in this kind of
retirement community, rather than some high rise apartment building, or a
mobile park. Who knows? Someone just might build it. After all, Dave and
Marsha built the Taylor Home Inn? Why not a Mayberry Retirement Community?
