I think you hit the nail on the head, Lydia, when you later said that it was probably some plot device. You will recall that the atmosphere was rather strained with a reluctant Mary Grace and an inexperienced Gomer added to the group. Andy and the others were trying to come up with some good conversation to loosen things up and make Mary Grace and Gomer feel more at ease. The fact that Andy's story didn't pan out was further evidence that the whole situation was awkward for everyone, which, in turn, sets up the misunderstanding about Gomer's sudden departure.
