Wasn't Andy's not wearing a hat simply due to the desired image of Andy as more laid back and casual? I thought this concept was due to a mutual Andy and Don decision to project Barney as over Zealous with Andy being calm and in charge. In a Larry King Interview Andy mentioned that early on he realized Don was the funny one and he was the straight man.
I like the earlier episodes much better for I felt they cast Andy as to straight following Don's departure....although I like Andy Griffith whatever role he plays and what ever he does. Dolly " don't believe Andy liked wearing hats because he had big ears that stuck out and a hat would draw attention to them. When he did wear them he looked a little goofy." "Listen with your heart. Never stop listening."
