Jerry Van Dyke has confirmed that this is true. He says he declined the
offer because at the same time, he had been offered the starring role in a
new show which most folks today have never heard of, namely "My Mother the
Car." I can't say I blame him, who wouldn't jump at the chance to star in
his very own show?

I'm not sure the Jerry Miller character would have worked in the long run
anyway, although they sure could have had some great musical numbers with
Andy and Jerry playing together. I believe the two of them later worked
together in Las Vegas.

deputy in the final b&W episode, was offered the role of Knotts'
replacement. Is that true? I've never heard or read that before.
