That has been mentioned on the list before, Van Dyke supposedly had a choice 
between being Barney's replacement and starring in "My Mother the Car."  He 
supposedly and regrettably chose what's considered one of the biggest flops and 
worst TV series of all time, a mistake he has supposedly acknowledged.  
Ironically, "My Mother the Car" co-starred Jack Burns' comedy partner, Avery 
Schreiber.  For all practical purposes his choice gave both of them some work 
that 
year.

Personally I think Van Dyke's character would've worn out fast if he remained 
like he was on that one episode, even though I loved him as Luther on 
"Coach."
