OK, So this was actually in our local paper two weeks ago. From the Kirksville police blotter: "Otis Campbell, 45, arrested for driving while intoxicated." So it just goes to show you, just when you think someone is out of circulation, they surprise you!
Also here's an interesting note on Otis: Unless someone has another example, I believe the last time Hal Smith reprised his role as Otis (other than Return to Mayberry) was in 1968 in the first season of the Doris Day Show. We watched it the other night, and in this particular episode about Doris taking her kids' egg route, she confronts a drunk "Otis" on his front porch as he eventually gets into his house by breaking a window. It was an obvious play on his TAGS role. And as if that wasn't enough, we're watching the first season of Have Gun Will Travel and in the fourth episode, Hal Smith plays a bartender. Yes, Otis has been an intoxicating presence in our lives for a long time!!!
