Several years ago, while watching TAGS on TBS and reading an article written about the show and Andy Griffith, I remember that Andy said he did not like the first episode very much; he considered this show too soft. In fact, this was obviously not a one-time-feeling moment because I have either heard or read similar remarks from Andy about this particular episode.
The first aired episode is the one about the new housekeeper and I love this show. It's about the only time Aunt Bee "talks" with a true southern accent, and, let's face it, it's one of the rare times she really hugs and kisses little Opie. She must have changed a lot from how she raised Andy since she hugged him so much he was purple! And the way she is finally accepted by Opie is such a lovely moment that it is one of my favorite TAGS moments. Aunt Bee tells Opie she does indeed need him, after he tells her how much she needs him because she doesn't know how to fish or how to hold a bat...she's helpless! I have always wondered. Could Andy have been referring to another episode perhaps? Maybe the pilot? Or maybe the episode that was listed as Number One didn't air as the first one? Or maybe he just didn't like the newhousekeeper episode and thought it was too soft. We all have different tastes. Makes you wonder though...
