Several years ago, I taught the TAGS Bible Study at my church. All my
lesson plans and such have just been lying on a shelf since then. Today, my
boss called me into his office and asked if I'd be interested in a lunchtime
bible study at work. Of course I said yes, then he said he'd like me to do
the TAGS bible study. I am so excited about getting to do this again.
Going to start next Monday with my personal favorite episode, #5 Opie's
Charity.

Re: I was watching an episode the other night on TV Land entitled
"Mayberry on Record". Does anyone know who the men were in the
"Country Boys" group? Did they ever record any songs (other than on
the show)?

Progressive bluegrass band the Kentucky Colonels had a short but
legendary career during the folk revival of the late '50s and early
'60s. The band was formed in Los Angeles in the early '50s by brothers
Roland, Eric, and Clarence White, and their sister Joann. When Joann
dropped out, the three brothers began billing themselves as the Three
Little Country Boys and appeared on local television after winning
first prize in a talent contest. In 1958, Arkansas native Billy Ray
Lathum became their banjo player and dobro player LeRoy Mack joined the
band the next year. Lathum's arrival allowed Roland White to switch to
mandolin, his instrument of choice.

As the Country Boys, the group recorded their first single, "I'm Head
Over Heels in Love with You." They began appearing on Town Hall Party
and Hometown Jamboree and recording on Gene Autry's label. Bassist and
banjoist Roger Bush joined the band in 1961 after Eric dropped out to
marry. Three Little Country Boys then recorded "Songs, Themes & Laughs
from the Andy Griffith Show" for Capitol. Before the year was out,
Roland was drafted and left the band for two years, leaving them
without a mandolinist. The group cut its first album on Briar, which
disliked the band's moniker and suggested a series of names, the best
of which was the Kentucky Colonels. In 1963, fiddler Bobby Sloane
joined the Colonels and Roland returned as well. By this time, the
Colonels had begun to gather a following through their U.S. tours, and
appeared at both the UCLA and Newport Folk Festivals in 1964. The band
recorded several albums and appeared in the movie The Farmer's Other
Daughter. They really took off musically when fiddler Scott Stoneman
replaced Sloane, but broke up shortly thereafter in 1965, with each
member going their separate ways.

Funny, the different places that TAGS shows up. The following exchange came
from the episode
"Home" in season 4 of the X-Files.

Scully: "Mulder, if you had to do without a cell phone for two minutes you'd
lapse into catatonic
schizophrenia."
Mulder: "Scully, you don't know me as well as you think you do. You know, my
work demands that I live
in a big city, but if I had to settle down, build a home... it'd be in a place
like this."
Scully: "It'd be like living in Mayberry."
Sheriff Taylor : "Agents Mulder and Scully... Hi, I'm Sheriff Andy Taylor."
Mulder: "For real?"

And then a little later....

Sheriff Taylor: "By the way, this is my deputy, Barney."
Mulder: "Fife?"
Deputy Paster: [disgruntled] "Paster."

Jim, can you do the possum dance?

I figure I may get away with this post because I asked about possum (as opposed
to armadillo or sloth) and possums are mentioned on TAGS.

I read a story and got the following information about "krumping". It was
described as a high-energy dance movement in South-Central Los Angeles where
the performers dress as clowns. Don't that beat all?

I think they should be dressed as teachers.

Cindy, the performing name of the Country Boys was the Kentucky
Colonels. I don't recall his name at the moment (Leroy Mack/Leroy
McNees???), but the dobro player has performed at Mayberry Days in
Mt. Airy with The Dillards. The banjo player was Billy Ray Lathum
who in the late 60's and early 70's played banjo for The Dillards.
As far as I know he still performs now and then. I saw Billy Ray
about 2 years ago at Down Home in Johnson City, TN with a band. I
think Roland White was the mandolin player and Clarence White was the
guitar player and he passed away about 30 years ago. He was one of
the most inovative guitar players of his day though, and influenced a
whole lot of other folks including Tony Rice who is a guitar playing
legend in his own right.

Roland played mandolin for Country Gazette in the 70's, then in the
80's and 90's was a member of The Nashville Bluegrass Band. I think
he's been touring on his own or with his wife the past couple of
years.

Yes, The Kentucky Colonels do have some tapes and CD's out. I hope
this helps and maybe somebody out there can corroborate my thoughts
on who the band members were. Also, I don't know who the bass player
was.

Jim

Hum, won't write on the walls, huh? Well, er, yea, ok. Everybody on the truck.
And
it will be just like a visit to Barney's too. I live in a cozy little
apartment, cook on a
hot plate (I'll put on a pot of chillie) and right outside my door is the duck
pond. Ok
it's not really a duck pond, it's a swimming pool but in the spring there has
been two ducks that show up here and they seem to think it's a duck pond. I
have a trivia
game too. Wow! We're going to have fun!

Thanks Jim Hady and Steve for your responses to my inquiry. Jim it
sounds like that was a fun event you attended..(Did Barney leave Feb a
quarter?)but I'm not sure if it matches up to the Television special
that I commented on.

Steve, you answered my question...I've never seen that 25th anniv show,
but it sounds like the 30th was based on it, but expanded to include
more of the stars. It's the only thing I've seen that has Hal Smith and
Jack Dodson talking about the show (among others I've seen live or on
other specials)..and also the cameos from Anetra Coursant and Elinor
Donahue. The Darlings were not on this one.
Anyone know of any other specials??? Jim Clark..would still like your
comments on that event. (30th anniv show by TBS) Was anyone else there
in the audience?

In that special Jack Dodson mentions Mr. Schwamp and his "bad toupee"
He also said he had "bad false teeth" He also talked about one close-up
they tried to do of Mr. Schwamp pouring a glass of Root Beer at the
Lodge, and him being too shaky to do it. That cracked me up because I
hadn't heard that when I started the theory on this Digest that Mr.
Schwamp was a root beer-aholic. I just noticed he was always in the
early scenes of parties/gatherings and then was often absent later. I
assume that he got a little to buzzed and had to leave early.

Thanks for that Halycon Winslow dialog. That is a classic story.

Hey, all, everyone who knows me and how much I love AG has been making sure
I know about the new Andy Griffith CD coming out, "Bound for the Promised
Land." My question is, does anyone know if these are new recordings? A lot
of the songs I see listed are available on his other CDs, and I'm wondering
if this is just a new compilation of songs he's recorded previously. Anyone
know.?

It's always been my wish to see Jim Nabors perform a grunged up version of
'The Impossible Dream.' A nice mosh pit in front of the stage would be a nice
touch too. It's no stretch really. Remember, Mayberry met the counter-culture
in its original run. Gomer had a little "groupie" waiting for him outside the
gate of Camp Henderson in the 'Gomer Pyle USMC' episode 'Love Finds Gomer
Pyle.' He has also hung around hippies. Psychadelic met olive drab in that
episode.
Think of it! Gomer meets grunge. Water and air are free!

Good morning -- I was looking at a web site on current
actor Steve Buscemi and thought, "He could be Barney
with his facial features." Here's a link to the
picture, with Buscemi on the right:
http://groups.msn.com/SteveBuscemiIndieKing/buscemimovieamptvstills.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=188

So, now I'm casting the whole movie set in the early
years of the show. I thought Tom Hanks would be a good
for Andy, but I'm curious what others have to say.
Who'd play Opie? Aunt Bea is a tough one, too. And who
in the world could play Floyd Lawson?!! Maybe Alec
Baldwin?

I'm gonna have to study on this thing.
