There's something I can address, as I have done it twice, once to North
Carolina, and this last time, 22 years ago, from Illinois to Knoxville, Tenn.
Around here "they" say I'm "not from around here, are you?" (Well, that's the
kindest way they put it.) I have lived in the same house for all these 22
years and made many good friends. My daughter was born here, so I consider it
home, but I know I will always be "not from around here."
I think I've adjusted pretty well, but the thing I will never get used to is
what I, privately, call "Southern Snow Craziness. At the first flake, everyone
goes out to get bread and milk. Schools are closed, and they can't be reopened
until the last flake is gone . . . unless they are out of "inclement weather
days." And the driving, well, there IS a good reason to close everything.
This isn't really a big problem because we rarely get even that much snow. And
I've learned to keep my grumbling to myself or within the circle of people who
know I just can't help it.
There are a lot of great places in North Carolina to retire. BTW, my husband
is a Carolina native, and he always thought TAGS had more of a midwestern feel
to it than a Carolina feel. Is that why I became a fan from the first show.
(That'n always makes me cry.) Is that why I married that red-haired Taylor boy
from North Carolina? Hmmmmmm.

In our part of the country it is a conflict of interest for an official of the
county to be on a city council. I think Andy was a council member not because
he was the Sheriff but because he was a prominent citizen of Mayberry. Maybe
they waived that rule just so Andy would be able to provide the council with
his logic and wisdom.

If the Oakboro Music Hall is not reason enough to go to the Mayberry-esque town
of Oakboro, I will encourage you to come early enough to eat at the new
Mayberry Daze Diner. Our County Clerk Jeff Branch has ventured into the
restaurant business and if Saturday morning's grand opening was any indication,
it will be a success. Joining in for celebration was a host of tribute artists,
including:
David Browning
Kenneth "Otis" Junkin
Gary "Briscoe" Wedemeyer
Phil "Ernest T" Fox
Mount Airy's own "Aunt Bee," Alma Venable
Allan "Floyd" Newsome
The ribbon was cut by the most Darling person, Maggie Peterson Mancuso!
Congratulations to Jeff and thank you to Maggie and all the tribute artists for
making the big day a success.
Jeff is hosting three big summer shows with Mayberry flavor - check out the
schedule on their website at http://www.oakboromusichall.com/.

I had a thought recently watching the moulage episode. Wouldn't you all think
that Luke couldn't go far on foot to sell the stolen cows and that no one in
Mayberry would buy a cow from a hobo? Seems like news that thieving was going
on would alert everyone to his malarkey and they'd all band together to stop
it. I guess the writers forgot now and then about their original concept; but
then there wouldn't have been that nice story of Barn's loyalty to Ange.
