There was in fact water on the Forty Acres lot, or at least adjacent to it.
There were numerous scences that were filmed in the Tarzan movie series in
an area next to the Forty acres property that was across from Baloona Creek.
In the famous aerial photo this area is cropped off but it was in the upper
right portion of the photo. I'm not sure if that particular scene was filmed
there but maybe. I think the lake scene from "The Jinx" with Andy, Barney
and Henry Bennet was also filmed there. There was also a smaller pond at the
Franklin Resevoir site that may have been used. This pond was across the
road from "Meyers Lake".

Maybe Mayberry has a kind of "universal" feeling that a lot of us can relate
to. I grew up in a suburb of Dallas, TX. Thirty to Forty years ago this area
hadn't boomed and had a small town feeling. A lot of my family was located in
even smaller towns in North Texas and we got together often. The way we
talked, ate and kidded around reminds me of folks in Mayberry. Life did seem
slower and gentler and having a good time involved food, family, friends, games
like dominos and music. It was interesting to meet someone who wasn't from
around here, the way they talked was so unusual.

Anyway, Mayberry always seemed to have a small town Texas feel to me.

Welcome all new subscribers! I hope you find the Digest a "Friendly
Town"

I couldn't help but comment on the entry below

>>My name is Lydia Bow and I am from Shady Grove, MS <<

Lydia, What a pretty name, Lydia.. You probably get this all the time,
but are you from Ancient Greece? Do you play bridge? Do you like to
Out-of-doors, or the Guitar? Or Chit chat?

OK that's enough, sorry, but do you know that your town (Shady Grove) is
also the name of a favorite song on the Griffith Show? It is sung by
Charlene, and the Darlings. That's pretty amazing to have two TAGS
connections like that. Your husband, George, doesn't repair TVs does
he?

Its been interesting reading all the regional feels that Mayberry has to
it (Northern , Southern, Calif, NC etc.) I think that's just way it was
designed. For a long time the state was never mentioned, because it
was more like Mayberry USA. Lets just say this. It has a small-town,
kind of county, but not to rural and not too City feel to it. Just like
where we all live/grew up..."my home town"

Someone asked about more "Northern" references.
1) Otis's directions to the still (Ohio Pennsylvania etc)
2) John Masters sent all the way to New York for a music arrangement
3) Akron Ohio--wide open according to Emmett
4) Detroit, Chicargo--places Goober was going to take his talking Dog

There are many more but those are a few.

I heard than Don Knotts was coming out with a new Potato Chip.. Its
just right for the Dip!!

I can't imagine any clothing line from Don Knotts. Someone emailed me and
said Don was promoting a Barney Fife game at a trade show. What would a
clothing line consist of? A deputy uniform and a salt and pepper suit? I
think the
guy on the radio was mixed up. A game makes sense to me.

one good place to move is southern Missouri, the Ozarks, where the Clampetts
(Beverly Hillbillies) came from, there's a whole lot of Mayberry type towns
in the Ozarks, and many of it's citizens are Mayberry fans too.

I've got the southern bug myself.

I'm a computer flight simulator pilot, and a duly ranked captain thru
Pacific West Airways out of Denver Hub
www.pacificwestairways.com

I also have an Cessna 208 Caravan aircraft permenently sitting on the ground
at Mayberry NC (Mt. Airy Surry County Airport KMWK) that I have set up in
Microsoft F/S 2002
this airport currently has a 4300 feet runway, of which I CAN land and take
off a Boeing 737-400 (of course, I have to use full 30 degree flaps when I
take off, but it is possible to do so. Sometimes I do fly passenger service
into here, using my own livery and not under PWA
Mayberry is not that far from the major airports, like Charlotte, Raleigh,
Atlanta, Cincinnati and Nashville.

If there any other Mayberrian Flight simmers I'd be interested in hooking up
with ya.
and maybe setting up our own network along the lines of what PWA does
I do use the plane I got at Mayberry as a sheriff's plane (yes Mayberry has
come up in the times, now Sheriff Andy has a plane in Mayberry's stock of
vehicles

Currently below is the current FAA write up on Mt. Airy Surry Co. Airport
to see a pic of the actual field, and click on the links in the site go here
www.airnav.com/airports in the search box type in either KMWK or MWK and the
page will show up.
Now tell me, doesn't the photo of the airport look the airport that Aunt Bee
took her flight lessons out of?

Hey to all Goobers,
I was just reading of how a couple of you felt your home town was very much
like our

beloved Mayberry. I decided to add my hometown to the list. I grew up in the
small town of Danville, Indiana home of the famous Mayberry Cafe. I would
definitely add my home town to the list.It had a slow and easy pace and an
atmosphere which was perfect for any child to "grow and glow." If I think back
to
childhood days I can almost see Little Opie walking down my hometown streets
dressed in his little jeans and striped T-Shirt and wearing the little black
and white tennis shoes popular in that day. Either of my own two little
brothers could most easily have been "Opie" We could play till after dark or
till called to supper, with no fear of "boogie men" of any sort.
I'm sure there were many "Mayberrys" in many places but I do thankfully
recall growing up in one of my own.
Happy Memories to "you and yours!"
Danna In Indiana

Hi all!
Having lived in the south now for the past 30 years (originally from
Colorado) I was at first amused by the south and it's treatment of snow. But
now in
retrospect I can say that it just is not worth it for a community to invest in
snow clearing equipment for an event that at best happens only once every
other year. It's not like up north where snow and ice are environs to be
reckoned
with for up to six months of the year.
I prefer to see the southern treatment of snow a sort of a "Southern
celebration of winter" And besides, what's the harm in taking off a couple of
days to be with friends and family to enjoy a rare occurrence.
Thanks,
Steve
