I grew up in the sleepy town of Quincy, Florida. Quincy is
approxiamately 25 miles west of Tallahasee and has a population of
somewhere around 8000. I was born in 1962 so I can still remember the
'good ole days'. Matchbox cars and Hotwheels for 50 cent, baseball cards
when you bought the bubble gum and the cards were free, penny candy, the
Sat monster movie matinee for .25 at the Leaf, $2.00 haircuts, little
league baseball when the object of the game was to have fun and everyone
got to bat, peanut boils, homemade ice cream and school lockers without
locks.
Quincy was in a way a lot like Mayberry. In the summers before I was old
enough to work, we roamed the town on bicycles and our parents didn't
have to worry about us. I can still remember my dad swearing because he
had to put locks on the doors of our house in 1968. I can also remember
on a family outing to the big city (Tallahassee) when my sisters and I
saw our first "hippie". A little known fact, 48% of all of the Coke
stock in the world is owned by people in Quincy, Fl.
Like everyone else here, I grew up watching Andy, Opie, Barney and Aunt
Bee. I wish everyone could have experienced my childhood. Our parents
loved us dearly and are still married after 45 years. I could go on and
on but it brings a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye. I would trade
5 tomorrows for 1 yesterday.
Everyone around me considers me the authority on 60's and 70's
television. In fact, I have an Andy Griffith Trivia game that no one
will play with me because it is no fun losing. I hope I can contribute
something to WBMUTBB.

Hey everybody. I just got the word that season 2 on DVD should be
coming out around and about June 14th. Sounds good to me. While I am
on I was just wondering something. Fred and Jenny Boone seemed to be
happy fighting all the time. Do you guys know anyone who is like that?
I don't see how they could afford it, breaking all those dishes and
stuff. I can just see Ben Weaver smiling as Jenny comes in his store to
purchase new dishes all the time. Well, it was just a thought. Go to
go now. Horatio (Kevin)
Jenny; Hope, I didn't hurt your foot Barney.
Barney; Oh, it'll be okay in a few weeks.

In reference to BTaylor's message...
I am a native of NC, but only lived there about a year out of my life. Grew
up in a military family, mostly at Fort Sill, OK. That is where I was
living when the show was being aired originally in the 60's. As a kid,
actually about the same age as Opie at the time, I just took a natural
likening to the show and thought how neat it would be to be the son of a
Sheriff in a small town like Mayberry. It seemed to be the ideal place to
live. At the time, I did not really realize that Mayberry was in NC, it
just seemed to be the best place one could hope to be at the time!
As I got older and began to watch all of the reruns, I then could see the
life style of rural NC, with exception to the California landscape in the
background. Never the less, I guess it depends on what part of North
Carolina a person comes from and what he or she was exposed to, but there
are a lot of actions of the actors and sayings that relate to the way I know
of people of small North Carolina towns. Never the less, I have traveled
above the Mason Dixon Line a few times and have found very similar towns and
villages in New Hampshire, Vermont and Upstate New York.
Well, don't get too offended when people say "you are not from around here,
are you?", I am sure that somewhere in the shows, that very same question
has been asked in one way or another to some one coming to Mayberry.
Speaking as a born "southerner" I have asked that question as well to some.
The thing is, we do not have snow like ya'll do up north, I do think there
is an overreaction to it, but if we didn't close up shop there would no
doubt be a lot more traffic accidents and people getting hurt. Why, because
the way people drive! We get more ICE than SNOW. It is not safe to drive on
ICE. It seems some of those who have experience in driving in snow from
the northern states sometimes want to try to show everyone else how it is
done. Well..
Not trying to start anything here, I respect everyone's view, but..Southern
people, just like Northern people have a way of life. We in the South are
proud of our culture and history and the way we do things. We do resent
those who come down with U-Haul Trailers that want us to do things the way
it is done up North. There must be an attraction for people to move south
other than the weather, So...please don't try to conform us to a Northern
way of thinking, just join us and become part of a rich culture and who
knows, when you accept our way, and try to live the way we do in the south,
you may not have to hear that question as often.
No offense intended, but If the South becomes what the North has become,
where will you migrate to then? So just sit back and enjoy the show.

This past weekend my children and I were watching an episode from the first
season. In one of the scenes, Barney goes around a tree and says, "Bread
and Butter." I remember when I was a little girl, I used to do the same
thing around a pillar in front of a store in my hometown of Iowa Falls,
Iowa. It brought back nice memories, but I started wondering what in the
world that means! Anyone have an explanation for this "ritual"?

I was reading Presidential trivia this President's Day and found this
interesting (especially to Floyd) item: Calvin Coolidge - 30th president of
the United States, had chronic stomach pain and required 10 to 11 hours of
sleep and an afternoon nap every day. Perhaps that's why he said, "I choose
not to run."

Thanks to all who welcomed my idea of moving south. I've always heard of
Southern hospitality. As for crying about our weather and thus soaking
Arizona, I'll nip it right in the bud. I got to thinking about the north and
the south and wondered how many times the north was referred to on TAGS. Seems
to me Andy was offered a job somewhere up here but I can't remember where. The
shoe salesman came from NYC as did Ed Sawyer. Any other references?

Watching The Bed Jacket last night. The pond they're fishing isn't Myer's
Lake (Franklin Canyon Reservoir). Small plus there appears to be a
structure just in the woods off the back of the dock. I am unaware that
there was any water on the 40 Acres back lot, so where might this little
pond have been? And was it also used in The Jinx?

I've been reading about the "Feel" of Mayberry. Some have said, that for them,
Mayberry had a "Mid-Western Feel". Others have said that It had a "California
Feel" to them.
I got to thinking about it and I realized that It had a "South Alabama Feel"
for me. I have lived all my life in Alabama (Middle and North Alabama) and my
parents both lived all of their life in Alabama. My dad is from Uriah, Alabama
in Monroe County. Monroe County is in South Alabama and when I was growing up
we would visit family there a couple of times a year.
It was a farming community and for me everything moved at a slower pace. Some
of the small towns there reminded me of Mayberry. There were small barber shops
with men just hanging around, country stores, tractors and pickup trucks were
the norm, and you just expected to see Andy & Barn pull up to meet Goober &
Gomer at the service station. I loved that place! I called myself a country
boy but, In the words of Jerry Clower, when I went down there I was a city
slicker.
Goober says hey,
