I'm not sure, but wasn't that Ronnie Schell, aka Duke Slater, first
private and then corporal? He was the corporal after "Boyle" left Gomer
Pyle USMC. What was the character's name of the fur salesman who sold
Emmett the coat? Bernie? Bernie what? I remember Flora made the
connection for Emmett and Martha thought Emmett was stepping out with
Flora.
I saw Jim Nabors in an interview talking about the show and how the
opening credits of GPUSMC with the units parade marching was of real
Marines on the base, and Nabors' sadness that he knew many of these
young men who later went to Vietnam, many not returning.

One tid-bit about Max Baer, jr (Jethro). He is the son
of Max Baer the prize fighter. Max sr reigned from Indianapolis, my
hometown. We have a park named after him.

First off, did I hear Andy call old Jud by the name of Bert or Burt? Why
the sudden name change?
Second of all, is this the last episode where Andy has a prisoner in the
jail. Seems like after a while he quit sheriffing. I always wondered who
helped the prisoners when he left them alone. What if that pickpocket
from last night had needed the bathroom or had collapsed. Andy left the
jail unattended b/c he was so worried about finding a tenor for his
barbershop quartet.
Thanks for explaining to me about Howard & Goober. I guess as a fellow
bookworm I just always preferred Howard Sprague, tho Goober does read
10-12 books a month. Comic Books, that is. :-D

Today I was watching "The Great Filling Station Robbery," where young Jimmy
Morgan goes to work in the gas station and things start disappearing. The
brothers (Henson?) were parking their car in the station at night and stealing
things. (Looky there! A trojan horse!)
Anyway, it occurred to me that Gomer lived in the back room of the filling
station. If so, why did he not hear the noise or see the crooks? And why did
he not help Jimmy rig up the spark plugs to the cash register? Where was he?
Also, Andy gets a call from Gomer and Gomer tells him that he had "gone by the
gas station and seen someone moving around in there." If this is the case,
where was Gomer living? You could say perhaps he was "out" that night, but it
wouldn't explain why he was unable to catch the crooks all the other
times. This episode apparently takes place over a period of time, yet seems to
indicate
throughout that period that nobody is in the filling station at night.....
Where was Gomer?

Hey George, I'm pretty sure it was actor Ronnie Schell who played Duke Slater
not Corporal Boyle on Gomer Pyle USMC. Ronnie was the director for the Fosters
Furniture Polish commercial that Aunt Bee was going to do. Ronnie also played
the fur salesman that Emmett Clark was going to buy Martha's fur coat from. I
have to add that I had the honor of talking to and spending a little bit of
time with Ronnie last year at Mayberry in the Midwest III in New Castle, IN.
He is hilarious and my sister and I had a blast talking with him and having our
picture taken together as we were all getting ready to leave New Castle.
Flora, I loved the beautiful things you had to say about our Andy and how he
was never "heavy-handed" with the folks in Mayberry, and that he had a generous
spirit with folks. Like you said Andy was always so patient with "Old Barn",
getting him out of scrapes with Barney always ending up looking good. Andy
sure could have abused the power he had in Mayberry, but he never did. Flora,
as Andy said to Barney when Barney really opened up and shared how he truly
felt about Thelm Lou..."That was beautiful". We would all do well to embrace
a lot of the attributes that Andy had don't you think!!! It sure makes me want
to be a better person.
I'm paraphrasing this...
Andy: "I don't carry a gun because I would rather folks respect me than for
them to fear a gun."

Hey George Carlin (are you the real one?) You made this statement
>>>The fellow that played Boyle was the fur salesman that the sold
Emmett the fur coat her brought for his wife's anniversery. That is the
only time I remember him in a episode of TAGS.<<<
You are following my bad example of mixing up characters. You are
thinking of the actor Ronny Schell who was Corporal Duke Slater on GP
USMC, after Boyle left. Here is what I corrected a few days ago
regarding Boyle.
"Good catch Mark, sorry about that, when you're right, you're right I
salute you!!
The Army Doctor and the elusive Harry Becktoris was played by actor Paul
Smith.
Roy Stuart was Corp Boyle and does have a long list of TV appearances
(though he was never on TAGS)
Thanks for being a Trained Noticer!! (guess It was a molauge in my
mind)"
Ronny Schell (Duke on Gomer) was also in the Foster Furniture Polish
episode as the director.
Got it now Corporal #1--Boyle Corporal #2 Duke Slater Keys in the
Drawer.

Different actors.
'Cpl. Chalres Boyle' was played by Roy Stuart, in USMC seasons 2, 3 and 4.
Mr. Stuart did not appear on TAGS.
'Pvt. Duke Slater' was played by Ronnie Schell in USMC seasons 1 thru 3;
'Slater' returned in USMC season 5, promoted to Corporal, replacing 'Boyle.'
Ronnie Schell was the fur salesman in "Emmett's Anniversary," and also the
commercial director in season 7's "The Foster Lady."

K. Darden wrote, "Andy's quiet authority needed no weapon.
Barney's weapon carried no authority."
Never has the basic difference between these two characters
been better defined.
Barney always needed Andy; and Andy was always there to clean up the mess
Barney (and the others) found themselves in.
Did they appreciate Andy? Yes and no. Yes, everyone was very happy when Andy
straightened things out, but often it seemed to me they had a very short
memory, and would start giving him a hard time just as soon as the
going got rough. They would forget all the good Andy had done in the past and
would know that this time Andy was going to let them all down. (Funny enough
but Andy had
this same pattern with Opie.)
Well, that's enough of me getting all serious on you.
Lydia, I like serious sometimes, but I love funny always

K, what you said about Andy's leadership was just beautiful.
Every time I see anything about Calvin Coolidge it makes me think of the folk
at WBMUTBB. Here's a quote from the same man who said, "I choose not to run".
"If we are to maintain the great heritage which has been
bequeathed to us, we must be like-minded as the fathers
who created it. We must not sink into a pagan materialism.
We must cultivate the reverence they had for the things
that are holy. We must follow the spiritual and moral
leadership which they showed. We must keep replenished,
that they may glow with a more compelling flame, the altar
fires before which they worshipped."
