Didn't Andy wear shorts when they were getting ready to go to Hollywood (or
after the got there -- I can't remember)? Opie and Andy had matching short
sets.

It might be fun to insert the words
"sleep pants" into various lines of TAGS dialogue!
....OK Flora, here goes....."You're the one who set fire to
Jubal Foster's sleep pants,aren't you?"....Hey,that was fun!

I probably won't be the only one to answer this, but hey there's so much I
don't know, that when I do know something I just like to show out a little.
When Andy, Opie and Aunt Bee went to Hollywood, Aunt Bee bought matching father
and son outfits. The shirts were sort of red, Hawaiian type with white flowers
and were paired with brown shorts. Neither was too enthusiastic about being
seen in those clothes, but were too polite to say anything too negative to Aunt
Bee.

OK two things:
1. Goober was always more of a social butterfly than Gomer. Whenever Gomer
described him, he always described Goober as something of an authority or
someone to look up to, and the one time we see them together Gomer is showing
Goober off like a dog he just picked up at obedience school. ("Judy...Judy...I
can't do it!")
2. Good Ol' Boys like Goober usually readily fit into more social situations
in the south than shy bookworms like Howard (and like myself). It's not that
no one wants him around, they just have to work a little harder to get to
know him.

Goober fits in with the crowd because of his natural charm. Didn't Goober
also serve in some sort of national or state service? That's why he always
answered with "Yo!" in his early appearances. (Goober people, help me out
here.) Howard?! I don't think Howard clicked with the guys until he
returned the lake's most prized fish back to the lake.

Mark you asked if there were other times that Andy was seen in shorts and I do
remember one other time. Of course there were times when Andy was seen wearing
his boxers such as when he woke up during the night when Gomer was a house
guest. But the only time I remember seeing Andy wearing actual shorts that you
could wear in public, was when the Taylor's went to Hollywood. Aunt Bee bought
Opie a shorts/shirt outfit and Opie did not like it. When Andy came home and
saw Opie in the outfit, to keep peace with Aunt Bee, Andy agreed with her that
it was a great outfit. Poor Andy was then flabbergasted to find out that the
shorts outfit came in adult sizes too, and Aunt Bee had bought him one. The
expression on Andy's face was toooo funny!!! I can't remember Andy in shorts
any other time than that one???
Marie you were talking about Howard and why he wasn't welcome at the lodge, or
one the bowling team and in the fishing tournament. As I recall, one time
Andy said something about Howard being older than him and the guys in his
class, so maybe that had something to do with it. Also Howard was a truck
driver for the Mayberry Transit Company before he became the county clerk, so
he may have just simply not been around for these events. Plus you have to
remember that Howard was always sheltered by his overprotective mother. She
held him back from being like the other guys which kept him from being a
"joiner". He was a very respectful son and never wanted to hurt his mother,
which I have always admired. I was glad when his mom started dating and got
married because it gave Howard a lot of freedom and helped him to come out of
his shell. (Go man Go!!!) I always liked Howard and the honesty of his
character, in fact one of my favorite episodes was when he left Mayberry and
went
to the tropical island.

Andy and Opie had matching shorts/tropical shirts outfits when they were
going to California. I think Aunt Bee picked them out and I think the boys
weren't too happy about them. Maybe it was just Andy who didn't like his
outfit. I thought they looked spiffy!! :) Lisa

That scene is definitely funny. When the chickens don't march right out of
the Barn and Opie is tut-tuting to coax them Barney says "The heck with
that!" and starts waving his arms.
Another hilarious scene is when Barney is saying Cock-a-doodle-do to Juanita
and hangs up the phone. Andy has just walked in and says "Would you stand
up. I want to see if there's an egg in the chair."

Max Baer, Sr, father of Max, Jr was probably a descendent of immigrants from
the Germany/Austria area based on their names. Also the senior Max had a
tremendous physique being a heavy weight boxer. Doesn't seem likely Parley
would have come from the same blood lines. Just my uneducated observation from
Wisconsin.

I was thinking about Andy the past couple of days and how open handed
he was with the good folks of Mayberry. Although he represented the law
and authority of Mayberry, he had a generous spirit that believed in
the people under his authority. Comparing Andy to others in a position
of authority, Andy was not the type to grip the reins of his authority
so tightly that the townspeople chaffed under his authority. He never
looked for some small infraction or obscure perceived offense to throw
the book at someone or look over their shoulder too closely. Even with
Barney who made mistake after mistake, Andy always believed in him and
gave Barney every opportunity to prove himself rather than looking for
opportunities to catch Barney in an offense. I was mentally comparing
Andy to the mayor and others in authority in Mayberry and how the
others pale in comparison to Andy. They looked for the bad in people.
They gripped their small piece of authority and wielded it to force
people to tow the line. Andy quietly and gracefully led by example and
love. He didn't need to exercise his "authority" over and over... he
simply led by it. I think that's why we all love Andy so much. He
allowed the people of Mayberry - the Ernest Ts, the Barneys, the Miss
Crumps and Ellie Walkers to be themselves and he never tried to "Lord
it over" anyone. If they made a mistake, he usually tried to help them
see it for themselves rather than use his authority to put them in
their place. Impetuous Barney always wanted more authority to force
people to "nit it in the bud!" Andy usually believed folks could be
trusted to police themselves. That is why Andy didn't need the gun and
why we laugh at Barney and his bullet. Andy's quiet authority needed no
weapon. Barney's weapon carried no authority. Too bad more folks aren't
like Andy.

Didn't Aunt Bee once make Opie and Andy try on "Hollywood Shorts and

few times I've seen Andy's legs!

Hi Everyone,
Even in times of distress and pain, TAGS still pours
over into our lives...
I took a bad fall on Monday, onto a concrete floor
(broken finger, stitches in head, sprained ankle and
seriously bruised face).
While laying in the emergency room, my hubby said,
"Your a mess, you know that!"...
I'm a little woozy from the head bump and pain med's,
but I think Andy said that to Barney...
Anyway, hubby made me smile and feel better by
that remark. Mayberry words can always cheer a
body up!

Does anyone know if Parley Baer (Mayor Stoner) of
TAGS, and Max Baer, Jr. (Jethro Bodine) of The Beverly
Hillbillies are related in some way?
..................................................
One tid-bit about Max Baer, jr (Jethro). He is the son
of Max Baer the prize fighter. Max sr reigned from
Indianapolis, my hometown. We have a park named after
him.
