When I was a kid, my mother would have me use it for itching--to rub on insect
bites and stuff.

Of course she can also be used for various spells and incantations. :-)

Here is a good explanation on Witch Hazel: However, in Mayberry it was used
as a sort of after shave for men.

The earliest works on American medicinal plants included witch hazel,
primarily noting its use to treat eye inflammations, hemorrhoids, bites,
stings and skin sores, diarrhea and dysentery, and many other conditions for
which a plant high in tannins would produce relief by virtue of its
astringency. Herbalists consider it one of the best plant medicines to check
bleeding, both internally and externally. A tea made from the bark or leaves
is given to stop internal bleeding. The same tea was injected into the
rectum to allay the pain and itching of hemorrhoids, which today comes to
the consumer in the form of "pads" or ointments for hemorrhoid treatment. A
poultice of the fresh leaves or bark was considered useful for relieving the
pain and swelling of inflammations. Dipped in a cotton ball, witch hazel
water is dabbed on insect bites to calm pain and relieve itching. I find it
especially soothing on chigger and tick bites, as well as mosquito bites,
and poison ivy rash.
What attracted the attention of witch hazel as an herbal product was a
patent medicine developed in the mid 1800s. In the 1840's, Theron T. Pond of
Utica, New York established an association with the Oneida Indians of the
state. He learned from a medicine man that they held a shrub in high esteem
for all types of burns, boils, and wounds. It was witch hazel. Pond learned
as much as he could of the extract, and finally after several years, in
1848, Mr. Pond and the Medicine Man decided to market the extract, under the
trade name "Golden Treasure". After several moves and sales of the company,
a manufacturing facility was established in Connecticut, and after the death
of Theron Pond, the name of the witch hazel preparation was changed to
"Pond's Extract".

The CameraNut and Mrs. Nut will be away until June the 1th. Since she was
laid up with leukemia last year, we didn't get any vacation but one, and that
was
very limited activities at Mayberry Days. This year, we will be heading to
Anchorage Monday morning. We have Relay for Life this weekend, and next weekend
we will take part in the one in Valdez AK. Don't know if this part will get
thru, but we hope to be on the AlaskaCam from 4th and G Streets in Anchorage on
May 29 at 5PM Alaska time, 9PM EDT. The photo is a few minutes behind so
refresh or renew every 20-30 seconds for a new shot, and we should appear
magically
b4 your eyes!
This will be a vacation to remember, and I am taking some photos of the
statue along as well as a few Mayberry postmarks in case I happen across any
Andy
fans in the state of Alaska!
Be back in June, y'all hold things down til we return! Signing off the digest
for a couple weeks....theCameraNut and wife Carol heading '"North, To Alaska"

I decided there wasn't enough info about Mayberry's female mechanic
handy, so I created a Flora Malherbe Tribute Page at

Howdy Erin,

Witch hazel is an astringent....it will clean your skin and tighten your
pores. My grandma used to use it for it's an anti-inflammatory properties
as well.

A quality haircut at a fair price. Good magazines, checkerboard, centrally
located in downtown Mayberry. Floyd Lawson, a barber's barber. The best
barber in the county of Mayberry.

When I was growing up Witch Hazel was used as a topical for the skin. Used
for bug bites, scrapes and such. The thing I remember is the distinctive
odor.

I sure wish I could make it to the Barneyfest in WVa,sounds BIG,really BIG.But
the article I was reading mentioned that they were naming a beer after ole
Barn. Now if he couldn't hold his cider, why would we want to give him beer?!
Also,I saw a teaser on Nick about the Fatherhood toon and it had ole Barn. Will
he just be doing a voice for a character or will he be a new character on the
show.I've never watched it but may need to if my hero will be involved!

===================

A gunshot was fired into the floor in an Anderson County middle school
after a student accidentally pulled the trigger of a deputy's holstered
gun.

The gun fired Wednesday morning after a student at Lakeside Middle
School grabbed it as the deputy told them how hard it was to take a gun
from an officer's holster, Sheriff David Crenshaw said.

The student's finger apparently was small enough to get inside the
holster and pull the trigger, the sheriff said.

The bullet fired into the floor, and debris cut and scratched two
students. But no one was seriously injured, school officials said.

The sheriff's office has begun an internal investigation and the officer
involved is on administrative leave, said Crenshaw, who would not
identify the deputy or say whether he would be paid while on leave.

Today marks the anniversary of the founding of Jamestown - 1607! Opie and his
Mayberry Minutemen can explain it better, along with Indians and Redcoats and
cannons and guns and muskets and stuff. Me, I'm going to visit the Morrison
sisters and arrange to celebrate all proper. I mean, today is a holiday, ain't
it?
