No St. Bernard that I can think of (Barney's just a 'nick' for Bernard
you know?)
I do recall seeing a shaved collie in the Grocerteria, but if you don't
know Al Becker, it isn't going to be much of a story.

It's not a live dog, it's a picture. No one was correctly answered the
question yet (Where in Mayberry can one see a picture of a Saint Bernard?)
Here's a hint: think of a famous St. Bernard from the movies. This dog was
named after a famous figure from history. Once you've got the name of the
dog, try to figure out who in Mayberry might admire that historical figure.
There's no connection between this movie and Mayberry, the name of the dog
is just a coincidence.

First of all I want to say that my husband and I went to see "Cinderella Man"
and it was another Ron Howard masterpiece!! The story line was fabulous and
the fight scenes were even better. I too especially love to see the bit
parts by Rance & Clint Howard. It was one of the best movies I have seen in
a long time. Definitely Oscar worthy!!
Also my vote is a big resounding NO to a remake of TAGS! I saw the previews
of the Honeymooners and all I can say is SHAME! SHAME!
One final note, I must tell everyone of my little Mayberry moment. My
husband and I had our youth group over yesterday for a cook out and
volleyball game. Well when it came time to get everyone back to the church I
hollered "Ok everyone! Back on the truck!!" Of course none of the kids knew
what I was talking about but me and some of the chaperones had a snicker!! I
just love sneaking a little Mayberry into everything, do you??

I was watching the "Cousin Virgil" today and when Virgil doesn't get off
the bus as expected, Andy asks the driver (Rance Howard -- What other
episodes was he in?) if he didn't pick up a young man in "Currituck." In
the episode where Barney is having all the single women over to Andy's
house to meet Thelma Lou (maybe they're paintin' over at her house or
something), he is reading a nighttime story to Opie, "The Legend of
Sleepy Hollow" in which I think he mentions traversing the roads that
lead to or above "Currituck", or was it some other place that he had
traversed so cheerily in the afternoon?

With all this talk about a TAGS movie, don't forget that we do have a
full-length feature film from the series itself. I like to watch the
four episodes from the 1965-66 season where the Taylors traveled to
Hollywood for the filming of "Sheriff Without A Gun" (beginning with the
episode where Andy receives the $1,000 check and ending with the episode
where Aunt Bee's prizes from "Win or Lose" arrive). Granted the plots
are different for each episode, but it is one of the few if not the only
instances of a continuing storyline in TAGS.
Can anyone think of other storylines that continued from one episode to
another?
Sit down, get yourself a pan of cashew fudge and watch 'em all in a row!

P.S. They always talk about Darlene Mason playing the female "lead" in
the picture, so you think she'd be familiar with Helen Crump if she'd
done her research for the picture.

I agree the Quality can not be duplicated. That however is not the goal
of remakes.
They make fun of and laugh at the originals. Maverick was the biggest
exeption.
Beverly Hillbillies had a great adult recast Leachman Coleman Tomlin Varney
writing aside. Even Dragnet had the good sense to make it Nephew of
Friday and
Harry Morgan was at least a small measure of respect. But as I said
that's not the
Goal of most remakes.

Well if "making fun and laughing at the originals" is the meaning of the
re-make according to Hollywood---suits me if they never remake anything
again!
You don't just "poke fun" at the wonderful television shows of that
generation! It is not appropriate and disrespectful.
Make note I don't direct these comments at you directly---but what a corrupt
view of a "remake" that Hollywood gives us!

Currituck is the name of the North Carolina county just above Dare
county where Andy's home in Manteo is located. I suspect the writer or
Andy himself added that to give a local reference to NC.

That is actually Tarry Town. Andy is reading directly from Washington
Irving's novel, which you can read online at

Just one more word on this subject. The Rifleman, The Movie. I recollect
long ago reading in a Hollywood trade paper that this movie was in the
works. This was during the time when Chuck Conners appeared in a "Gambler"
segment with Kenny R. and Reba McEntire. Nothing ever came of this Hollywood
pipe dream but it was great to see Lucas McCain in full-color glory with
Kenny and Reba. He even mentioned what became of Mark. / Gomer Pyle movie
(my own pipe dream...) I thought Tom Hanks would have made the perfect Pyle.
After doing Forrest Gump, he looked and spoke the part (just a little
modification would be necessary). Even years after Gump, I was so hoping
that Gomer would become a movie with Hanks. I never got around to figuring
who would be Sgt.Carter. Naturally, Jim Nabors would be in the movie
somewhere. It was a nice dream for awhile. Can't use Hanks now but maybe
Gomer will make it to the big-screen yet! (A.A. MPk.)

One of the things I've been enjoying about the Season Two DVD's is the banter
and teasing between Andy and Barney. This seems to have developed more in the
second season. I get so tickled when Andy pulls his pranks on Barney -- like
when he catches Barney napping and then hides his shoes. Andy's enjoyment of
such moments seems so genuine (I love to hear him laugh!) that it doesn't seem
like acting at all. I guess that's why I get such a kick out of those scenes!
Anyone else especially savor them? What are your favorite pranks that Andy
pulls on Barney?

This is my first submission (I'm new to the bulletin board) but I
couldn't resist sharing. My daughter (19) is away from home serving
her first tour in the Air Force at Misawa Air Base Japan. She called
laughing the other day to tell me that she and a friend were waiting
for a bus along with several other folks when she heard a very loud
bird call...behind her...without thinking she said loudly "LOOK. ITS A
CAT" a la Barney. A woman behind her burst into laughter and as my
daughter turned to her the woman gave a little whistle and said.."ohh
I'm feeling baaad"...As they began to talk a bit ...my daughter
explained that she grew up watching the reruns with me...After the bus
came and as my daughter got to where she was going, the woman reached
up to her...grinned and said..."Have a wonderful day and go out and BE
somebody". Whoever that wonderful lady was, she helped my baby get
over a bad bout of homesickness.

In watching the Miss Mayberry episode on TV land last night, I noticed
something, and wondered if anyone else may have caught it. It was in Floyd's
barber shop, when Mayor Pike was responding to Andy's idea for a beauty
pageant. While the close up was on the mayor talking and Floyd was right
behind him, I noticed Floyd mouthing the lines right along with the Mayor.
This spiked my curiosity as to whether this was a common thing with dear Floyd
at other times. So needless to say, the rest of the episode I watched to see
if he did the same any other time. Now I'll probably watch for it in future
episodes. Anyway, just thought I'd pass on my observation, and see if anyone
else noticed it.
Everyone have a great Mayberry type day.

Please pardon this email if someone has already sent in this news. But I
was just sitting down to read the current issue of my Capper's newspaper and
noticed this under the news briefs:
"Don Knotts will get the first star on what could become West Virginia's
version of Hollywood Walk of Fame. Morgantown, Knotts' hometown, will honor
the actor, best known as Deputy Barney Fife on television's 'The Andy
Griffith Show' later this year, and it hopes to eventually confer the honor
on other celebrities."
Such good news. Another well deserved recognition for ole Barn!
And away I go~ Andrea
