Sometimes you just feel like an idiot. I'm pretty proud of my skills as a
trained noticer, but I sure failed this test. My favorite episode is #5,
Opie's Charity. Annabell Silby (Lurene Tuttle) sure sets the stage for some
of the finest writing. But I digress. I had never realized that Lurene was
the little old lady shoplifter that clanked. Sure, I can spot Tom Jacobs 2
blocks away in a background shot, but I can't pickout major characters
played by the same actress. I just ought to go ahead and turn in 1 badge, 1
hat, 1 gun, 1 holster, 1 bullet............

Today's posting about Gomer and Mary Grace got me to thinking about the
eligible bachelors in Mayberry. Despite Ange's good looks, Barn's romanticism
and Howard's suave demeanor, I think I'd go for Gomer or Goober for their
honest sincerity, enthusiasm for life and genuine love of their fellow man. Now
I'm not being argumentative, honest. My late beloved was a composite of all
those fine gentlemen for which I was truly grateful.

>>>I am sooooo confused. A while back I watched a rerun of an interview
about TAGS including an interview with Andy. He said that the make up man
played Banjo with the Dillards on an episode. They even centered in on a
photo of the banjo player when they were playing in a jail scene. I always
thought a Dillard brother or a Dillard band member played Banjo. Andy said
it was Greenway, I think he said the man's name was.
>>>

Andy surely meant that he and Lee Greenway used to get out their instruments
and play with The Dillards between takes, while everyone was relaxing on the
set. For every minute of film that was shot, there was probably 15 minutes
of waiting around. Lee Greenway never appeared on camera playing the banjo.

The regular Darling banjo player was Doug Dillard. In "The Darlings Are
Coming," his character is called Other (pronounced with a long O). Other is
Lee Greenway's middle name in real life.

A few months ago or so, i bought a replica of the courthouse (made from wood)
on this site....can't find the paper, and my brain just can't remember who i
got it from. I was wondering if the next building was under construction yet or
not (as this courthouse is too cool). I hope your still out there and can let
me know on this. Have a Mayberry day. i appreciate it and good night.

I believe you're referring to the TVLand show Top 10, where they counted down
the top 10 episodes of TAGS, as voted on by the cast. In the interview, Andy
says that Lee Greenway (the makeup man) played the banjo. Then, they show a
clip from "The Darlings" episode, where the family is sitting in the Mayberry
Hotel, playing a song. They highlight Doug Dillard, which could give the
impression that is Lee Greenway, but it's not. I think someone at TVLand may
have done some creative editing.

I saw the same interview about the music of Mayberry. I think the producers
must have taken what Andy said out of context. The Darlin' family member
playing the banjo sure looked like Doug Dillard. Lee Greenwood, the makeup
artist was an accomplished musician. I saw Maggie Peterson at a Mayberry
event and she said that when the Dillards would appear on the show he and
Andy would often go off to the side and play with them while scenes were
being set up. I think in the interview when Andy said that Lee Greenwood
played the banjo with the Dillards that he meant off camera.

About Hazel, the pianist for the Mayberry choir -- I always figured she was
considered an "extra" and so wasn't given any dialogue (and therefore wasn't
supposed to answer any of the other characters who spoke to her). I am
supposing she was picked for the job because she really could play the piano.
I like Hazel because she looks REAL. She looks like an ordinary woman, the
sort of lady you could visualize playing the piano at your local church.

While channel surfing the other night, I "seen" Johnny Cash, so back
tracking I discovered the program was Little House on the P., a church
scene, and who was right there in the first pew piping up? Sure looked like
Clara to me...a bit older & heftier, but the same voice.

Hi Mayberry friends,

I'm in a bind and I'm asking for help...
This week I'm putting in 9 hour days Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and
Saturday.

Will you please pray and keep a good thought for me?

Since this schedule came out I thought of Andy & Barn and when the FUN
GIRLS
came to see the jail.

Keep Jean Carson & Don Knotts in prayer also..

Bye Doll....

Your Friend,
Erin

Dear Kim and anyone else who's interested,

You are sooo right about our dear Gomer. In fact, I wrote
about him a few months ago; how sweet he was going on
a blind date and worrying that Mary Grace might be too pretty for him. That's
exactly what Gomer asked the boys.
"Is she too pretty for me?" And when they answered him, "No," he then replied,
"Well, you don't have to worry about me getting fresh."
Notice that? He had his answer--that she was homely, but that didn't bother
our Gomer at all. He only wanted to reassure everyone that he would be a
gentleman. A class act. And when the chips were down, they still didn't trust
him. That broke my heart. Gomer has never done a mean thing to another person
in his entire life. Some people can
not be happy unless they are pointing out the mistakes other people make. But
not our Gomer. His life is spent helping
those in need. So, they should have gone after him to get
his side of the story (but then we wouldn't have had a good
comedy). But you get my point. He was on foot and they had
the car.
In any event, Gom is a fave of mine and I don't care who knows it.
As for me not liking the guitar, what can I say? The heart
likes what it likes for reasons of its own.

Lydia, "She's nice, she's real nice." And Gomer, so are you. Your nice, you're
real nice.

Lydia,
