Growing up in NC, I knew two Goobers. However, both had different "real"
names. There was Bill "Goober" Jones and David "Goober" Poovey - both good
Mayberry surnames! While Jones is pretty common, I like to think Poovey
(as in Louann) was used because it's authentic in NC. I can lay claim to
being kin because my grandmother was a Poovey.

Hey everybody. I just got the unofficial word that Season 5 of The Andy
Griffith Show will be out around Feb.14 2006. What a great valentines
gift that would make. So start hinting now to your loved ones. It'll
be just great that we can have all the Black & white episodes on DVD. I
hope that put out all the seasons, but the B & W are a must have. Well
got to go now. Just thought I would pass along the good news. Horatio

Gomer- "Must be the lighting like Andy said"

Have any of you noticed that quite frequently, Andy and Barney make mention of
attending the Lodge? For those of you not familiar with Masonry, the Lodge is
the meeting place where Masons meet fraternally, and to discuss altruistic
endeavors, such as community projects and so forth. I wonder what Lodge is in
Mayberry? Usually, towns in the South have a sign at the beginning of town that
display emblems of the resident organizations such as Lions, Elks, Fremmasons,
etc. I want to be a member of the Mayberry F&A Masons. Dr. Steve in Wash DC

Hey,
Did any of you trained noticers happen to see a recent "Murder She Wrote" I
think it was on Monday evening. I had it on but was running here and there
doing odd jobs so I wasn't following the storyline very closely. A familiar
voice caught my attention though, that of "our"
Ernest T. I don't recall just what his role was but then I later heard one
of the other main characters being called, "Mr. Mayberry." "Such goings on,
Such goings on"
In regard to the name Gomer, I have never met anyone by that name but I
do recall as a child, my older sister usually referred to a less than
handsome fellow as "A Real Gomer"
so I had that preconceived notion.... up to the time of "our" Gomer. I then
did some undoing of that mental image. Though in the script, Gomer was meant
to look a little disheveled and not terribly handsome physically, he had a
more than handsome heart and spirit. And of course Jim Nabors is quite
handsome!!

No, but I went to grade school with a boy named "Hossie," and I just
remembered it now.
His given name was Randall, but he was a big boy, and even his parents
called him Hossie, so Hossie it was.
Hossie, are you on the list? probably not. oh well.

Our next door neighbor in Shady Grove, MS, was a woman named Effie Crockell.
She was very small and her husband was a large man named Homer. They had four
children, and we were entrained by their loud arguments. Sort of like that
fighting couple on Andy only I don't think that's how
they showed their love for each other; I think it was more of a way of showing
their dislike. In any event they stayed married until Miss Effie's death.
I haven't thought of Miss Effie in years. Funny how memory
works. Today we would have called the law on Mr. Homer. But
nobody did that in those days.

I had to go back to an e-mail I'd saved from Allen, but it looks like I've
been a member of WBMUTBB? since May, 1996. At that time there were only
about 170 members here! Wow, how we've grown! And my how time flies when
you're havin' fun!

If anyone is curious as to Keevy's early days, then you need to see the
movie "Bye Bye Birdie".
Keevy (Jesse Pearson) plays rock n' roller Conrad Birdie as he's about to
enter military service. He sings, plays a gold and black electric guitar,
wears a gold suit w/boots and drives a high-power motorcycle. Does a lot of
dancing, too! The only problem w/this "Keevy" is that he's mega-conceited
and lacks any kind of social quality of "our" Keevy!
It seems that all it took was a heaping helping of Mayberry, Aunt Bee and
Clara to straighten him out and make him a good and humble guy!
(If you're into K. Hazelton, then this is a must see!!)

Dear Friends,
I have very sad news to report. Mayberry's own "Fun Girl", Ms Jean
Carson, passed away on November 2, 2005 at 2:30pm.
Jean was a wonderful lady and I had the great pleasure of being able to
get to know her over the years. At only the second Mayberry event I
ever did as "Floyd" I was blessed to be able to reenact the scene where
Jean (as convicted husband beater Naomi) breaks a vase over Floyd's
head. Jean was *so* kind to me that day and it is a memory that has
never dulled. I was, and am, so proud of that day that there has been a
photo of that moment on my Mother Figure website ever since.
Jean allowed me to perform that scene with her many times over the last
several years and I will miss being with her but I know her spirit will
still be with me.
Another great memory is answering the phone early on Christmas morning
and hearing "Hello doll!" being spoken. There was never any doubt who it
was on the other end of that phone line and my only response was a smile
and a big "HEY JEAN!!"
There are so many wonderful memories of Jean that need to be written. I
hope the memorial board
http://www.mayberry.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=jeancarson
will be filled with fans and friends memories.
Jean Carson was truly a wonderful lady and I will miss her more than
words will say.
With sadness and joy,
-- Allan

I heard on the news that Andy Griffith and a few other actors such as Carol
Burnett will be receiving an award from the President next week. I did not
catch what this was. Anyone else hear this?
And, as for unusual names, how about Hodie Snitch?
