Hi Carol,
I actually know this one, but didn't jump right in because I figured I'd be
beat to the punch. Actually, Barney said that about Malcolm Merriweather, when
he was putting on being drunk, to allow him to leave and let Aunt Bee get back
to tending to the family. Was that episode titled "The Return of Malcolm
Merriweather"??

Had a slight problem. I hope this wasn't sent to the digest twice, if so,
please accept my heartfelt apologies. Computers make fools of us all.
Carol, Actually, Barney's line "There's nothing I hate worse than
>a wino on a crying jag" was spoken about Malcolm Meriwether. It was the
>episode where Malcolm was faking inebriation so Andy would fire him and
>Aunt Bea would take care of the household and be happy again. I think that

Thank you so much to all those who reported sites and sources for photos of
Andy getting his much-deserved Medal of Freedom. I was able to watch the video
and print the photos and a nice girl is sending me a local newspaper too. I
taped the C-Span viewing of the ceremony and felt so proud of our sheriff! I'm
thrilled to be a Mayberrian along with such fine folks.

Yes, yes I know. It's the Golden Door to Good Fellowship,
not the yellow door of good fellowship.
Maybe they won't blackball me for that goof.

Last week a team from our church went to Kiln, MS on a disaster relief
mission. One of the highlights each night was that all the volunteers would
spend time after supper sharing. One of the guys on our team does a dead-on
Ernest T, and once he got started, every night the group clammored for some
Ernest T. Just goes to show you, everybody loves Ernest T.

>>>Some of the words were "grant us they perfect peace" (I think). Does
anyone know what classical piece of music this might be?
If you're thinking of the same episode I'm thinking of, the tune is
"Liebestraum" (which means "Dream of Love") by Franz Liszt. Andy Griffith
also used this tune on one of his old comedy records, namely, Love Poems:
"To the Lovely Juanita Beasley."

Carol I am pretty sure when old Barn made the statement about ...."a drunk on a
crying jag".... he was talking about Malcolm Meriwether. It was in the episode
where Malcolm was giving Aunt Bee a break from all of her work and Aunt Bee got
upset about it, so Malcolm pretended to be drunk.... and that's how that
statement came about.
I checked with Allan about how long I have been a part of WBMUTBB and he
reminded me that I joined in August of 2000. I must say this is one of the
finest group of folks I have ever come to know, from Jim and Allan to all the
tribute stars plus all of you my friends here on the digest. I have come to
know so many of you through personal emails off the digest and you are truly
(as Big Maude would say) "treasures" in my life. I will never forget my first
Mayberry Days when I introduced myself to Allan and he "remembered me"! Let
me tell you, like that lady reporter told Mayor Pike: I was just so absolutely
"thaaarrilllllllled" that he knew who I was. I remember introducing myself to
Jim Clark at the first Mayberry in the Midwest and he said: "Oh yes, Anita..
then he made "typing motions" and said "from the digest" because he knew who I
was from my posts here. I want all of you to know how much I treasure the
digest and all of you my friends here. It is truly a highlight of
each day to come here and visit with all of you and enjoy all the memories of
TAGS we share together.

I am the one who asked the question on the digest. Someone emailed off the
digest with the answer, but I guess the answer never made it onto the digest.
Here it is. Barney said it about Malcolm Merriweather in the episode when
Malcolm comes to town and Andy decides to hire him so that Aunt Bee can be a
lady of leisure. The scene is the one where Malcolm pretends to be drunk while
he is serving Andy and Barney their lunch so that he will get fired and Aunt
Bee can return to her normal duties. Malcolm pretends to be crying, as well as
drunk, and says "I think I know when I am not wanted." and that is about the
time that Barney says "Nothin' I hate worse than a wino on a crying jag." Hope
that clears it up for you.

President Bush:
Here at the White House, we get an interesting mix of
visitors. Already today I've met with the Secretary of
State, Secretary of Defense, and the Dalai Lama -- and
the Sheriff of Mayberry. (Laughter.) Andy Griffith
first came to the people's attention with his gift for
storytelling -- and his own life is a mighty fine
story by itself. He started out as a high school
teacher, and in his amazing career he has gained fame
as an actor, and received a Grammy Award for his
singing. He will always be remembered for the "Andy
Griffith Show" and "Matlock." Yet, he has also given
powerful dramatic performances in such movies as "A
Face in the Crowd."
Looking back on his Mayberry days, Andy explained the
timeless appeal of the show. He said "it was about
love. Barney would set himself up for a fall, and Andy
would be there to catch him." (Laughter.) The enduring
appeal of the show has always depended -- and still
does -- on the simplicity and sweetness and rectitude
of the man behind the badge. TV shows come and go, but
there's only one Andy Griffith. And we thank him for
being such a friendly and beloved presence in our
American life. (Applause.)
