I heard something interesting on public radio last night, Andy in a
showtune, Destry rides Again, from 1959. I knew he did standup, I love his
Shakespeare, but didn't know he did show tunes.
Anybody know much about his broadway career?

I just noticed last night on another episode in the Season 4 DVD's that it had
a laugh track.
So that now confirms that at least 2 episodes do have laugh tracks. There is
probably more but I get so into watching the show that I never even listen for
laugh tracks.

Mr. Schwamp may always be a mystery as to who played him, but so will
the third Floyd. Since Howard McNear was the second actor to play Floyd
the barber, who was the guy who was referred to as Floyd in the
barbershop at the beginning of A Date For Gomer? It certainly wasn't
McNear.
Also, the laugh tracks are a matter of preference to the viewer.
Without the tracks, everything I'm watching seems more real to me. With
the laugh tracks, I'm reminded that I'm watching a TV show. So, my
preference is no tracks.

Have 48 (mostly 6 hour) tapes catalogued, and another 10 or 12 that I
Just haven't gotten around to yet. Every episode (a couple of times
Each, just in case something happens.) :)

actually that surprises me Allan, cause if you hear the characters talk
about him during the show, they call him Mr. Schwump
wonder why the difference between that and the books.
wonder if I hold the all time record of TAGS.
I got 16 6 hr tapes.
4 8 hr tapes.
3 of those tapes are uncut shows (w/o commercials)

Um, I believe Amzie Strickland played Otis's sister-in-law Verlaine, not Otis's
wife. Verlaine was Otis's brother Ralph's wife.

Anybody out there know if Mayberry in the Midwest is going to return this year?
There's a bunch of people out here in western Missouri who are hoping so.

<< My mind immediately runs to the Christmas Story and poor old Ben.
While he attempts to retain his cold attitude toward mankind (even
at Christmas) there is something about him that wins your heart.
I look forward to watching him every year at this time.
Jeff Howard >>
Yes, sir, I'm with you there, Jeff. Last night I was feeling rather lonely
(my wife is out-of-state tending her mother's health problems) and
decided to pull out my TAGS DVD containing The Christmas Show.
I fluffed up a pillow near the fireplace decked out in garlands interwoven
with dazzling Christmas lights, silenced the telephone, forbade the dog
to move or bark, and turned the clock backward to Mayberry 1960.
The mood was instantly warm, friendly, mellow, and nostalgic.
It reminded me of Christmases long past, the simple happiness of
childhood, how we were protected and nurtured within the love of our
families, and how the holiday's magic and wonder even seemed to peek
through the grim facades of some of our community's more cantankerous
souls. Well, as you can see, I grew up in Mayberry too.
I guess there are still Ben Weavers among us who need
this same wondrous love. As The Christmas Story played out, it was
touching to observe our Mayberry family, on both sides of the bars,
celebrating Christmas Eve within the retreat of the court house.
And it was equally touching to see cranky,
ill-humored old Ben clinging to the jailhouse window bars singing
"Away in a Manger." I'm glad he was finally able to "break in."
And how about his hidden nature that finally came out in the end
with his gifts? All seriousness aside, I also think Barney Parney Poo
made a perfect Santa, however unlikely and undernourished
he may have been!
>From the Alpine splendor of the high Rockies, I wish all my
Mayberry friends a wondrous, joyous, blessed Christmas!
May God bless you and give you a happy, healthy New Year!

I got tickled at the thoughts of the Darlings and Bass' on Family Feud. If
they buzzed Ernest T out before he got to say his answer, he'd say to Richard
Dawson "I'm gonna get you and those kissing lips of yours too." Where Ernest T
would be great would be Fear Factor. He'd eat any weird dish set before him
and the stunts would be routine for a man what could chuck a full grown mule
across his shoulder.
And the thought of Barney's hair being mussed then straightened then messy
again when he's trying to answer History questions would be great. He'd choose
all the music and history questions, but he'd excel at odd facts known by few.
Floyd could answer the Presidential quotes, Goober could answer anything
mechanical or comic book related and Gomer could answer monster movie and
Marine questions.

My wife and I were singing along with Charlene the other day when she was
singing the song "Let Me Be Your Salty Dog", and after we got through I looked
at my wife, laughing and said "Honey will you let me be your Salty Dog? She
said "hmmmmmmmmm........ I don't know. I wonder what that means?" I told
her "I don't know either but the way Charlene sings it, it must be good." I
told her that I would ask all y'all and see if any of you knew where this
saying came from. So here goes...
Does anyone know what the saying "Salty Dog" means, or where it came from?
Hey to Goober,
The Other Alan from Huntsville

I saw Mr. Foley on the Walton's this morning. He looked the same but was a bit
chubby. Always good to see home folks!
