I think the reason Helen got so upset with Andy when he invited Gloria along
to the movie was the fact that Gloria was not "family". Remember Aunt Bee
said she was "just like family" so I think Helen, in this case, was
justified. But I do think on other ocasions, especially when Andy would not
set up a date for Howard, that Helen really used her "pouting" to get Andy
to do what she wanted.

I never thought about what Mr. Schwump (yeah, yeah, I know all about the
other spellings, but he'll always be the Schwumpster to me!) did for a
living. Given his demeanor, I can see him making his fortune as a ticket
taker at The Grand. After all, he would be perfect - just take the ticket,
nod and smile - take the ticket, nod and smile..................
I figure he made a little nest egg, bought that rug and retired to a life of
high society functions as part of Mrs. Wiley's inner circle.

Yes, Helen Crump had a temper, & yes, she was known to get a bit snippy.
Some said something about that nice nurse Peggy, but remember, that the
nice Nurse Peggy was dating Andy only a short time. She probably would
have gotten snippy, too, if she'd been through what Helen went through
(The Fun Girls at the jail, Barney always announcing their engagement
falsely, etc.
I wish just once that A & H had turned the tables on Barney & announced
his engagement to Thelma Lou. He once asked something to the effect of
"What about you & Thelma Lou? You've been dating longer than Helen & I
have" but that's as far as Andy went.
Thanks for the Lou-Ann replies. I remember "That Old Black Magic" sung
off key & Sgt. Carter's reaction when he heard her recording & heard how
awful she was. The "Partride Family" used this same plot line with a
girl who auditioned for the Partridges & Reuben. Keith saw how pretty
she was but never heard her awful sounding voice, just as Sgt. Carter
had done yrs. ago.

>>I wonder why--and maybe I missed it--the topic of North Carolina BBQ never
came up.<<<
Good question, but I still think it's a greater mystery why basketball was
barely mentioned. That gap led me to write a Fan Fiction Episode on
Mayberry basketball. I know it was mentioned (but never shown) as a gift
and in reference to Aunt Bee and Clara..but that's about it.
...And can you imagine a girls basketball team in that era?? That seemed out
of place.
I think the answer to both of these, though, is that the writers were not
from North Carolina for the most past. Remember also it was season two of so
before they really admitted Mayberry was in NC. (wasn't it Paul?)
>>>I was wondering about Mr. Schawmp. I wonder where he lived? Did he ever
talk to his friends or just smile and nod? Didn't he have a job? He could
have had a wife at home! Maybe he had a whole secret life that we don't
know about! Amy<<<<
Well Amy I'd have to agree with the earlier post that he was not married.
Maybe a widower like Andy. My guess is he worked on the loading dock at the
furniture factory. He would wear his suit and walk around with a clipboard.
He would point to boxes that needed to be loaded up. When trucks would back
in, he would watch them and wave them back, and then nod when they were far
enough back. When they unload stuff on hand-trucks they would roll them
around and say ask "Here"? Mr. Schwamp would shake his head "no" and
point. When they got to the right spot, he would nod and grin.
After a successful unloading of a truck, Mr. Schwamp would buy
Root-Beers from the breakroom for everyone. Then he would sit on a bench
out on the dock, and wait for the next truck. I think he may have lived in
a tiny cute little house where he listened to Music (sometime practice
dancing), Play solitaire, do some gardening, and think about what to wear to
the next social event.

>>>I didn't think that Andy deserved Helen's wrath in the episode when
Andy's cousin Gloria came to stay... When Andy invited Gloria to the
movies, Helen was angry.<<<
On the contrary, I think I can understand Helen's feelings regarding Gloria.
If I am remembering the episode correctly, Gloria wasn't actually related to
Andy. Wasn't she the daughter of a close family friend, or something like
that? Consider the situation -- here was a young, attractive woman, not
actually a relative, staying in Andy's house and getting a lot of his
attention. Furthermore, her recent heartbreak made her more vulnerable to the
attentions of another man and also made Andy feel that he needed to make an
effort to console her. A situation like that is rife with potential. Many a
romantic entanglement has developed in real life under similar circumstances.
If I were in Helen's shoes, that would be a "red flag" to me!!
I don't think it was wrong of Andy to take Gloria to the movies (though it
could be viewed as a "date"), but since Helen was his steady girlfriend, it
would have been wiser to have consulted Helen about the situation and asked if
they could make it a threesome. Better yet, I think Andy should have
encouraged Gloria and Helen to develop a friendship. That way, Gloria would
have had another woman she could have confided her troubles to and sought for
advice, rather than involving Andy and possibly compromising his relationship
with Helen. I think Andy, who was normally wise and insightful, should have
realized that himself. The only other adult in the house was Aunt Bee, who was
very supportive of Gloria but was more of a mother figure to her (no reference
to Ernest T. here!). I believe Gloria would have felt more at ease having a
confidante who was a peer, like Helen. Furthermore, if Andy had backed off a
little and fostered a relationship between these two women instead, Helen would
have regarded Gloria as a friend who needed her support, not a rival for Andy's
affections.
That's my two cents, anyway. :-)

Calvin Coolidge 1872-1933, the 30th President of the United States said two
things that I know of for sure:
1. "The higher state to which she (America) seeks the allegiance of all mankind
is not human, but of Divine origin. She cherishes no purpose, save to merit the
favor of Almighty God." (From his 1925 Inaugural Address)
2. "The foundations of our society and our government rest so much on the
teachings of the Bible that it would be difficult to support them if faith in
these teachings would cease to be practically universal in our country." (From
his writings)
~"In essentials, unity; in nonessentials, liberty; in all things, Love."

Hey Folks,
I just added a few new items to the Mayberry Emporium website:
TAGS Scripts
These are copies of the actual scripts used to film the show. It is great
fun to watch an episode and read along. I currently have 4 scripts available:
"The Darlings are Coming"
"Barney's First Car"
"A Girl for Goober"
and the super rare "Return to Mayberry"
I am always looking for more scripts. If you have a script and would
consider sending me a copy, I will send you any 2 regular scripts or a "Return"
script for you trouble. Just email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
(mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]) or [EMAIL PROTECTED]
(mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED])
Remember visit Weaver's Department Store for all of your Mayberry items.
Then if you are still looking to buy come on by the Mayberry Emporium and say
"Hey"

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone in Mt. Airy. It's gonna be BIG!!!

hello there,
PART I
Gibson's Wild West Spectacular came to Mayberry last night, not my favorite
episode but i cherish something in all of them. But i Really admired the Wild
West Show's advertising posters [one was given to Floyd]; i am a fan of the
west and TAGS is my favorite show of all time; just wondering, what are the
chances that one of those posters might still be available?? i'd love to get
one.
I thought Earle Hagen's music in this episode, as usual, was incredible!
PART II
i would love to see Earle Hagen's music on CD. i would love to get ALL OF IT.
his score's are brilliant and truly enhance the scene's. i feel that he is so
underated in the world of music.
also, i look forward to ALL Andy Griffith Show being available on DVD. i hope
they do a high quality version of it and it would be GREAT if some of the cast
members & writers would do commentary with it. Due to their age, sadly, i feel
we do not have a lot of time to get their take on all the stories and behind
the scenes fun. I'd really love that.
i'll keep checking back to your site.
thanks for lending an ear and if i can help in any way, please let me know.

I noticed that one of the supermarket tabloids has an article about Andy
visiting Mt. Airy for the dedication of his statue. They had nice things to
say about him. I think it was the National Enquirer.
