I don't recall every hearing Barney say the famous quote about "There are
none so blind as those who do not see." The only person I recall saying it
was Colonel Harvey when he and Andy were talking after the Colonel came for
pot luck.
"There is pot luck and there is pot luck."

Hello Fellow Mayberrians!
First of all let me say that I am so excited about Mayberry Days this year.
I am counting the days. This is the first time that I will get to spend the
entire weekend and go to the shows. Since I live in Greensboro, I normally
just ride up for Saturday.
Second, I need some of your help. As I have told you, we are planning a big
Mayberry Dinner for our pastor in Nov. As a gift to our pastor and his wife
we are giving them matching "Barney Throws" to curl up with while they watch
TAGS. We wanted to give them a gag gift too. I thought about a nice "Mosaic
Cow" to hang over their fireplace. I don't know the first thing about
mosaics. Where could I get such a thing?
Help!
Teresa

Carol, I don't remember Barney saying the "none so blind.............."
line, but I do remember Col Harvey saying it to Andy when Andy turned down a
free bottle of elixir.

Lou Ann and Gomer must have been acquanited back in NC. If I'm remembering
correctly, she came out to California for her singing career then decided to go
back home and marry Monroe the football hero. Then when she came back, the
marines thought she was married but she explained that she wasn't.

I would have to agree that most of the time Helen was snippy with Andy he
deserved it. He was not always as honest with her as he should have
been. Most every situation I can think of she would have understood
about unless he was clearly wrong. I have never gotten the spaghetti
thing either. If Andy had just told her what happened she probably would
have laughed about it and told him they would do it another time. Of
course that would not have made such an interesting story, would it?
There were times when Peggy and Ellie were angry with Andy too. Even if
Helen didn't have a good reason to be snippy...well, everyone has a bad
day! I'm sure there were times when Andy or another character was snippy
at people for no good reason. This is an interesting discussion.
I also think that you should go to Mayberry days! Live a little! It'll
be...what do they call it? A BLAST! You sound like you really deserve a
break. While you are there (if you go)...don't worry about how things
are going with your store.
I was wondering about Mr. Schawmp. I wonder where he lived? Did he ever
talk to his friends or just smile and nod? Didn't he have a job? He
could have had a wife at home! Maybe he had a whole secret life that we
don't know about!
Lots of luck to you and to your,
Amy

Could anyone give me the context of the scene when Barney says, "There are none
so blind as those who will not see?" It's been preying on my mind. Thanks.
Carol
Carol,
That wasn't said by Barney. It was said by Col. Harvey, in "Aunt Bee's
Medicine Man".

Good input Sue, I'll have to watch that one again, but I think Andy's
opportunity to clear the air was before that point. It would be a stretch
for Andy or any of us men, but I think what would have been best for him at
that time would be to realize that Helen was uneasy with a young women in
his house...and what she really needed, at that point, was some alone-time
with Andy....but you're right, he was in a tough spot.

I wonder why--and maybe I missed it--the topic of North Carolina BBQ never came
up. I mean I don't remember Aunt Bee EVER buried a pig in the back yard, not
even for the Darlings. But NC BBQ--eastern and western--is one of the state
greatest contributions to Western Civilization, IMHO.

Yesterday morning on the ABC Family Channel, I caught Rance Howard and Jean
Howard on an episode of 'Two of a Kind' starring Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen.
The episode was from 1998. They played a married couple. Mary Kate and Ashley
thought that Jean's character was trying to harm or kill them for some reason.
I
just caught the tail end of the episode. Jean was billed as 'Jean Speegle
Howard' in the closing credits.

It's Colonel Harvey, not Barney, who says that. The episode is "Aunt Bee's
Medicine Man." The Colonel is offended when Andy doesn't agree with his
product and the accompanying sales pitch filled with Indian stories.
Bartlett's attributes the original quote, "There is none so blind as they
that won't see," to Jonathan Swift (1667-1745).

>>> 1. Is Brushey a mispronunciation of Nate Bracey or vice versa? Were
the names just similar? Maybe Nate was just a popular name the
year those boys were born.
You mean Nate Bushey, not Brushey. It's possible that they were both
supposed to be the same person, but one of the characters mis-pronounced the
name, and the director decided to just leave it in rather that re-shoot an
otherwise perfect take.
There's a funny story about a Star Trek episode with a monster that was
called something like "Maguto" (it looked like a white ape with spikes down
its back). After Deforest Kelley (Dr. McCoy) ruined about a dozen takes by
mispronouncing the name of the creature, the director figured "if you can't
beat 'em, join 'em," and changed the name of the monster to the way Kelley
said it.
>>>
3. Off Topic, but when did Gomer meet Lou Ann Poovey? For someone who
never got around women he was pretty comfortable with both Lou Ann
& Miss Bunny. Of course the latter was Sgt. Carter's girl so that
probably made it easier.
That's not off topic at all, discussion of Gomer Pyle - USMC and Mayberry
RFD is always welcome on this list. Anyway, the answer is that Gomer met
Lou-Ann Poovie when she was performing at the Congo Club (she was a rotten
singer -- not just bad, ROTTEN!), a niterie near the Marine base. At first,
Duke Slater and Sergeant Carter both competed for her affection, and Gomer
wasn't all that interested. Of course, she chose eventually Gomer. I
haven't counted, but she appeared in probably 15-20 episodes, the first
being halfway through season three. Elizabeth MacRae also appeared on TAGS
as Betty, the "big sister" in the "Big Brothers" episode (Howard Sprague had
a crush on her).

It looks like we may be on the verge of starting a moulage about barbeque like
the recent hot dog series. Now I don't want to be a know it all, but being
from Texas, well barbeque is my subject. Don't even get me started on TexMex.
Regarding Mr. Schwamp's secret life, I'd be disappointed if he had a wife at
home since he seemed to show up stag at dances and Mrs Wiley's. However, maybe
that's the cause of the grin.

Thanks for all the response about whether I should close my store and go to
Mayberry Days. All but one said to go. I went ahead and made my reservations.
I'm all amped up about this September is a slow business month anyway.
I'll make up for it later in the fall and Christmas.
Whoever else is going, look for me. I'm tall and thin with light brown hair.
I will probably wear my comfy pastel bib overalls. My husband has dark hair
and a moustache. He's very handsome I might add. If you recognize us say
hi. I hope to find Jennifer the Mayberry bride.
I would like to find a bullet keychain. Someone said you can buy them
there. I have never seen it on the Weaver's website.
Maybe I'll make this an annual trip!
See you there,
Bee in New Concord, OH
