(I am resending the following message because it apparently got lost during the
time that the digest was AWOL. -- Janet)

>>>I didn't think that Andy deserved Helen's wrath in the episode when
Andy's cousin Gloria came to stay... When Andy invited Gloria to the
movies, Helen was angry.<<<

On the contrary, I think I can understand Helen's feelings regarding Gloria.
If I am remembering the episode correctly, Gloria wasn't actually related to
Andy. Wasn't she the daughter of a close family friend, or something like
that? Consider the situation -- here was a young, attractive woman, not
actually a relative, staying in Andy's house and getting a lot of his
attention. Furthermore, her recent heartbreak made her more vulnerable to the
attentions of another man and also made Andy feel that he needed to make an
effort to console her. A situation like that is rife with potential. Many a
romantic entanglement has inadvertently developed in real life under similar
circumstances. If I were in Helen's shoes, that would be a "red flag" to me!!

I don't think it was wrong of Andy to take Gloria to the movies (though it
could be viewed as a "date"), but since Helen was his steady girlfriend, it
would have been wiser to have consulted Helen about the situation and asked if
they could make it a threesome. Better yet, I think Andy should have
encouraged Gloria and Helen to develop a friendship. That way, Gloria would
have had another woman she could have confided her troubles to and sought for
advice, rather than involving Andy and possibly compromising his relationship
with Helen. I think Andy, who was normally wise and insightful, should have
realized that himself. The only other adult in the house was Aunt Bee, who was
very supportive of Gloria but was more of a mother figure to her (no reference
to Ernest T. here!). I believe Gloria would have felt more at ease having a
confidante who was a peer, like Helen. Furthermore, if Andy had backed off a
little and fostered a relationship between these two women instead, Helen would
have regarded Gloria as a friend who needed her support, not a rival for Andy's
affections.

That's my two cents, anyway. :-)

Sent this a few days ago, (shorter version) but it didn't make it through.
I don't know if it helped or not. I asked the Darling boys if they thought
it was the cure, and they didn't disagree.
