Paul, I got the word on the fourth try. My grandmother used to do a word
puzzle in the newspaper everyday called 'Scramlets'.
Which is basically rearranged letters of a word. Granny loved that part of
the paper.

My wife and three year-old daughter were meeting some friends for lunch
yesterday. The deli where they ate has numerous antiques for decorations,
one of which was a phone similar to the one in the sheriff's office. I got
a kick out of the fact that my daughter pointed out the phone and said "Hey!
There's a phone like on Andy Griffits!" Looks like we're bringing her up
right!
Hope everyone has a wonderful time at Mayberry Days. I look forward to
reading your reports and seeing your pictures.

Ok my fellow Mayberry pouting friends, ok, ok, ok.
All of us who aren't going to Mayberry days are pouting.
We're pouting, pouting, pouting. Oh, I understand it alright,
I really understand it. I went once, in 2000 and every year sense I find my
self pouting at this time of the year.
What are we going to do? Well, just as you would expect from Barney, I have
a couple of ideas. Now follow this carefully and don't write it on the walls
because it is very
difficult to erase writing off the walls.
First off, the week of Mayberry Days needs to become a
national Holliday. That's right, the whole week, a national
Holliday! That way, no matter where we are, we are in
Mayberry. Now, most of us have nick names such as Thelma Earnest T., Barney
(that's me because for the last 40 years you've been telling me so) etc.
Prepare yourself, this is Big! It's really really BIG!
Therefore, I hear-by declare that the last week in September is National
Mayberry Day.
Now, that puts us all in Mayberry so all that we have to do now is get into
our costumes and make the best of it.
I told you it is Big! Didn't I tell you that? Didn't I tell you that!

Wanted to put my two cents in about what a great experience Mayberry Days
was. From seeing Andy himself at the statue dedication (I agree with you,
Anita,
that hearing and seeing him sing Mayberry Union High was simply incredible),
to walking the streets of beautiful Mt. Airy, to having a pork chop sandwich
at the Snappy Lunch, to meeting all the cast members as well as the
wonderful look-alikes, to enjoying the parade -- well, it was just a
picture-perfect
weekend. I even got to be on the local news - what a treat!
Thanks to the Surry Arts Council for doing such a wonderful job with
Mayberry Days, to TVLand for honoring Andy's request by putting a statue in Mt.
Airy, to Jim for all that he does for TAGS fans everywhere, to the cast members
who made themselves so available during the weekend, to all the new friends I
made around town, and to Allan for helping us to stay in touch with each other
through the bulletin board. I'm ready for next year!
Have a Mayberry day!

I agree with Anita -- Mayberry Days was BIG - BIG, BIG!! I've been to quite
a few and this was, by far, the best!
Of course, the most important event was getting to finally see our Andy! I
arrived at 5:30 AM and thought I had a good seat, but there were quite a few
people pushing to the front, so we could not see very well. I also want to
thank the man in front of me (I was sitting close to Anita) for taking
pictures for me! Andy looked wonderful and spoke quite a bit about how TAGS
was created. I also got chill bumps and teared up when we all sang the
Mayberry Union High song. The statue is just beautiful.
Barney (David Browning), Floyd (Allan Newsome) and Goober (sorry, I can't
remember his name) did an OUTSTANDING job (as usual). Our daughter came up
for the day - her first time to Mayberry Days - and was totally mesmerized
by them. One of the highlights was during the Country Revue when a female
quartet (I think their name was Sounds Exceptional???) sang a song to our
Barney -- he was sitting in the middle of them. What a HOOT! The
expressions on Barney's face were classic! There was also an act with a
ventriloquist holding a Barney doll. He had names of episodes on big cards
that were held by members of the audience and had the little Barney giving
clues and the audience had to guess which episode Barney was describing. It
was real good too.
The Dillards concert was also very good -- which included three of the four
Darling boys! Charlene sang two songs that were absolutely great!
Betty Lynn was as gracious as ever and looked wonderful.
I, too, met new TAGS friends and put names with faces from WBMUTBB.
I bought my tickets for next year and can't wait to go again!!
Everything is alright in Mayberry!!!!

We returned back to reality yesterday as we drove our 6/half hour drive
back to Ohio,
but what a SUPER weekend it was. The weather in Mt. Airy was gorgeous.
We not
only got to see & hear Andy, but we did so many other fun things. We
went to Pilot
Mountain, went to the gravesite of the Siamese Twins, ate at The Golden
Corral, &
saw Col. Tim's Talent Time. We got to walk the streets our our favorite
hometown,
saw a wonderful parade, went by Wally's(you have to experience that)!
It was hard
to leave, but yet we will always keep those memories in our hearts. We
got pictures
by that great new statue Andy dedicated, thanks again to Andy & TV Land
for making
that come true. Can you tell I'm excited, that Mayberry feelin' lives
on......Dave in

Hello friends and neighbors!
Thought I'd report in on my Mayberry Days experience. Andrea had requested a
full and detailed report, so here goes....
I awoke at 4:00 on Friday morning to get ready to go to Mt. Airy. I live in
Northeast Tennessee, two and a half hours away from Mt. Airy. At 5:00, I hit
the road. Interstate 81 was sparsely traveled at that time, so I had the
highway all to myself at times. For a while, I drove in silence, joyous in the
anticipation of attending Mayberry Days. Then I put my V W Boys CD, entitled
"Snappy Lunch" into the player and enjoyed the Mayberrish tunes those boys
cranked out. There was even an interview with Mr. Charles Dowell, owner of the
Snappy Lunch.
I pulled into Mt. Airy at 7:30, and barely found a parking place. The crowd was
already getting pretty big. I figured I'd drop in the Snappy Lunch for some
bacon and eggs on my way to the amphitheatre for the unveiling, but I couldn't
even get in the door. So I just walked on down towards the stage where the
statue was under wraps and found a good place to stand. Since the ceremony was
still an hour and a half off, I figured I'd pass the time by visiting with
those around me. After all, we Mayberrians are a friendly lot, are we not?
The first man I spoke to was a vintner from a nearby town. I learned a lot
about making wine. Then I met a lady from Canada who taught me a lot about
that country and their government. Another fellow I talked with was from near
Chattanooga. He was a wonderful gentleman who told me of making and
transporting chemicals. It was fun to visit with other folks "like us." Then
it was time for the program to begin on the stage.
First up was the honorable mayor of Mt. Airy, Mr. Jack A. Loftis. Next, an
invocation was given by David Beal, Commissioner for the City of Mt. Airy.
Then Mr. Larry W. Jones, President of TV Land and Nick at Nite took the mic and
made a fine address. And finally, the moment we'd all been waiting
for......Mr. Andy Griffith arose to speak. A hush fell over the audience of
several thousand. Silence fell across the land. Time stood still. But then
it started again when both Andy and Mr. Jones jointly pulled the covering from
the statue, and Andy proclaimed, "Welcome Home!" as he directed everyone's
attention to the bronze likeness of Andy and Opie walking to the fishing hole.
The silence was broken by the thunderous applause that followed. Andy then
proceeded to deliver as fine a speech as he's ever made. He explained that
when TV Land had asked him to attend a function honoring the show some months
ago, he had said he'd come if they'd assure him they'd place a statue in his
hometown. Then he said, "God bless them, they did!" He went on to tell tales
about the early days of filming the show, the actors and actresses involved,
and how the producers, directors, and actors all worked together to write the
shows. When he arrived at the end of his speech, he began singing the
"Mayberry Union High" song in a wonderfully strong voice. I mean to tell you,
the finest pipe organ in Europe couldn't compete with the melodious notes
emanating from the depths of Andy's larynx! I don't even think his uvula got
in the way.
Next on the agenda was a lot of picture taking by the media. Posed shots of
Andy and his family members took a little while, but then The Dilliards and
Maggie Peterson took the stage and sang some good ol' Darling tunes. I mean to
tell you, it was goooooooood!
I went for a stroll around town after all those festivities, and just sort of
soaked up the atmosphere. The line for the Snappy Lunch was already lined away
up the street, but everybody was being just as patient as could be, waiting
their turn. Floyd's Barber Shop was also a happening place to be with all
sorts of us touristers checking out the place where Andy used to get his hair
cut. I made my way down to Mrs. Wiley's tea party, stopped in later at the
Cinema to see the shows and hear question and answer sessions of the stars,
then headed back to The Andy Griffith Playhouse to take in the afternoon
matinee of The Dilliards. That was some kind of fine show! The playhouse was
full, the show second to none. Our own Alan Newsome brought joy to the crowd
with his fine rendition of Floyd, while David Browning took off on Barney, much
to the delight of all.
About the time the concert was over, it was time for the trivia contest out
front. It was an amazing sight to behold competitors answering HARD questions.
It was a beautiful thing to watch. Just beautiful.
Then, just when you'd think it couldn't get any better, Alan announced for the
members of the WBMUTBB chapter to gather for a group photo. It was quite
exciting to get to meet many of you for the first time and put names to faces.
What a great time! What a pleasure to finally put faces with names. When I
announced that this was my first Mayberry Days, you'd have thought I'd won the
lottery the way everyone was welcoming me. Sure made me feel good. Thanks,
y'all.
It was supper time by now, and my lovely wife and two boys made it into town
about that time. They had waited to leave TN until they got out of school that
afternoon. A lot of the big activity had died down a bit by then, so I just
took them on a driving tour around town, showing them Andy's homeplace, the
Playhouse, and the Main Street attractions. We didn't get to take in the
evening festivities since we needed to get the boys in bed if we expected to
get up in time for Saturday's morning's parade.
So, that's the end of the first day. I'll get to the second day in a later
post. I hope this isn't boring you. I don't mind ordinary conversation, but I
hate chit-chat.
Talk to you later.
Kindest regards,
Mark Selby,
Kingsport TN.

Were any of you standing at or near the rails when Andy and Cindi were
leaving City Hall, after the statue unveiling? I was lucky enough to be
able to hand Andy a framed drawing I rendered of he and Cindi as they
were walking past the crowd to their car. Unfortunately, we didn't get
a GOOD photo, or any video of Andy accepting the gift. I would greatly
appreciate someone sharing there photos or video of this event with me.
Thanks to all the good folks who were around us on the rail and were
rooting me on. A very special thanks to all (Jim, L.P. and Alma,
Lorraine, Charles and Mary, Jeff, Tanya, .....) who tried their best to
make this event happen for me! To those who weren't able to be in Mt.
Airy, we missed you!
It was great to see all of our Mayberry friends again.
