The fun girls turned out the lights when they were there with Andy and Barney.
It was part of a game that Skippy was playing. How about when Barney and
Melissa were on her couch and the heat from the bulb was hot? The lights were
out at Wally's in the Trojan horse episode. The lights were out in Weavers when
they were trying to solve the robbery case. The bank lights were out in the
episode when the so-called folks from Hollywood were in the bank. I can think
of other times but this should be a good start.

In Wisconsin, Normal Schools were teacher predatory colleges where a person
would attend for two years and then would be licensed to teach elementary
school with the stipulation that you had to earn your bachelor's degree
within a designated amount of time. I attended a two year county teachers
college back in the '60's which was a normal school at one time. However, I
think they discarded the name "normal" once I enrolled.

In most t.v. shows, old or new, they don't lock doors or turn
off lights. They never have screens on the windows either.

Charley's inquiry about Central High vs Union High reminded me of a question
I had about schools. Clara and Aunt Bee were said to have attended school
together, where they played basketball. I think the name of it was
Sweetbriar Normal School. I've always wondered what was meant by "Normal
School", any Scholars know? Was there an abnormal school?
Kim - Wylie, TX
Kim,
My grandmother went to a "normal school." She's 100 years old this year.
She wanted to be a teacher, but colleges and universities were mainly for
men. She had to get some kind of a degree to teach and so they had the
normal school. These were only a two-year school and were cheaper than the
colleges and universities.

If I'm not mistaken, Normal Schools were where a person was trained to be a
teacher in the olden days. I'm not sure if this was a place where just young
women attended, since men had more opportunities to attend Universities, or if
both went there to attend to learn how to teach, but I'm inclined to think they
were established for women.

A "Normal School" was a college or university that was created for training
teachers. Many of today's universities were originally "Normal schools"
that expanded their focus and dropped the "Normal" from their name.
And yes, there are some abnormal schools, but I don't think most of them
advertise that fact...

I thought I knew but checked google.com to make sure. Definition through that
site is a school to train teachers. Term, the rederence said, is now obsolete.
I had thought normal schools had to do with race because I taught for 12 years
at Alabama A&M University, a predominently black school that was once a
"normal" school. But since blacks were trained to teach black children in our
once segragated school system, A&M could have been one place where those
teachers were trained.

And the lights never throw shadows (except when they're needed for dramatic
effect) even in the corners or right up against a wall. The studio lights
always eliminate all the shadows.

I could've sworn I've seen people turn lights on when they arrive sometimes.
At the courthouse, I'm guessing they leave the lights on for Otis.
Now we *have* seen lights go on and off before, usually so Barney can make
out with Thelma Lou in some of my favorite moments from the show. ("What's the
matter? Never seen a man drinking a cup of coffee?") And of course, the
Mayberry Knot-Tying Club apparently isn't big on lights either.

So, what did everyone think of the big debate the other night?
I have to admit, I was shocked at how ugly it got very fast between those
two. You think that wouldn't happen between two men of similar backgrounds,
but
the differences were very plain.
And to be honest, I almost changed my vote at one point. After all, "76
documented cases of malfeasance in the Mayberry Sheriff's Office" is nothing to
sneeze at. Still, I think I'll vote for Andy.

Kim I have always heard that "normal school" was another name for "elementary
school". Has anyone else understood it that way?
I don't mean to make a moulage out of the lock comments, but today I noticed
something different about the locks at the courthouse. When Otis and Warren
met for the first time and Warren was putting Otis in the cell, Warren took a
small key out of his pocket and opened the cell with it. Was this the first
time any of you remember the keys being different than they always were?? I
don't remember another time when the keys weren't really big and on a big ring.

"Normal school" is an old-fashioned term for a teacher's college (that is, a
college where one could learn how to become an elementary school teacher).
Apparently both Bee and Clara planned to become school teachers. Remember,
in the "good old days," teaching or nursing were just about the only careers
available for women.

A Normal school is a teachers college. Why Normal as
opposed to Ab-Normal is beyond me.

I can think of one instance when the lights were
turned off; then on; then off...Barney & Thelma Lou in
the courthouse! Who could forget the lipstick on
Barney's face.

Thanks for the kudos Jeff. I'm having a lot of fun with John-Boy, Billy and

appreciate the way they promote TAGS and have cast members on when they are
available. Listen again next week.

Many of you may remember about 3 years ago when I announced the addition to our
family of my adopted son, Johanan. He has watched TAGS with me from the
beginning.
If he hears the opening theme, he will come running yelling, "ANDY!" I'm
training him right. He is such a joy. It's hard to believe he will soon be 3
years old.
If anyone is interested, I have updated his web page with his latest pictures.
