Subject: Watchin' TV

I don't think they watched much TV at Andy's house if for no other reason
than where the TV was. When you come in the front room, it was always dead
right, up against the wall of the front porch. The way the rest of the room
was normally set, there were 2 seats stage left that would have had a
reasonable angle on the set, but would have been all the way across the
room. The couch sat so that the end of the couch faced the TV. And the
chair Andy tried to read to Opie from would have had its back to the TV.
The 2 examples of TV watchin' I recall were when Gomer stayed over and they
gathered around the set to watch the show about Shep the dog. Then the time
there was a crowd over to watch Howard on Colonel Tim's. Both times, the
furniture had been gathered around to face the TV. Heck, in the Shep
episode, Gomer and Opie had to sit on the floor!
So, my theory is that watching TV was just too much of a hassle, what with
having to move the furniture around and all. Now if there was something
special coming on like a George Raft movie, that would be worth planning for
and moving furniture. But just to pop on the TV to catch the weather, I
just don't see them doing that.

As I've often lamented, I'm a poor excuse for a trained noticer. Why, just
last night I watched the pilot episode of TAGS and don't remember anything
about being buried in a rented suit. What's the gag?

Amy,
I just loved your list ....You know you're a TAGS fan when. Thought I'd try
to add some others to your great list.
You Know You're a TAGS Fan When:
1. You get married during Mayberry Days and have Betty Lynn and Maggie
Peterson Mancuso as honorary bridesmaids -- You all know I had to add that
one!!!
2. You have to stop and think about some of the words you say to make sure
you pronounce them correctly and not the "Barney" way when talking to those
non-TAGS fans. Ex. Kleptomaniac..... Kleptomenarack. Compulsion......
Compelsion.
3. You race home to be sure not to miss TAGS.
4. People refer to as " The one that really loves TAGS" or the "Mayberry
Nut"
5. You quote lines from TAGS without really realizing it... or you whistle
the theme song without realizing it.
6. You have some sort of TAGS memorabilia as decoration in your home and/or
office.
7. You use your vacation time at work to attend a Mayberry event.
8. You wish you lived in Mayberry.

I just noticed that Opie was crying in the very first episode, when Dickie,
his bird, flew away. I was
wondering if Opie ever cried in any other episodes? I can't remember ever
seeing Opie cry.

I drove through Mateo two years ago on my way to Roanoke. I believe Mateo is
part of the greater Roanoke Island area, which contains Kill-Devil Hill, et.
al.
The whole area is beach-islands-backwaters from the Atlantic. For those of you
who haven't been there, Mateo is a bustling little resort area in the summer
and worth a visit.
I think they called it 'Roanoke' in the interview just to give a margin of
privacy to Andy & Cindy!

"Shep and Dave" was a TV show, as the Taylors and Gomer are clearly seen
watching a TV and commenting on visual action. "Shep and Dave" appeared to be
modelled after "Lassie."
I believe the Taylors always had a TV, but we didn't see it much. We did see
it when we watch Aunt Bee win those prizes on the quiz show, and again when
she was the "Mayberry Chef", and possibly when Howard was a standup comedian.

Shep and Dave was a TV show. They missed the ending because Gomer was
showing them his hand or finger and they turned to look at him. You see the TV
in
the Taylor living room in a number of episodes, but they didn't watch it very
often. Chances are they could only get one or two stations as they were well
before cable or satellite dishes.

My guess is "Shep and Dave" could have been one of those shows that were
radio then as television became popular crossed over. Some of the early "soap
operas" transitioned from radio into live television with the same
actors/actresses portraying their same characters. Back then when the
television programs
were live...there was no room for goof ups. Can you imagine live dialogue
programs in today's time? Mercy me!
Let me see...did I could that shelf of pickles? Maybe I better start my Aunt
Bee's pickle inventory all over again.

Just wanted to add my good wishes to the rest thst you all have shared and to
thank Allen and all of the other members of our little corner of Mayberry for
being the bright spot in many a day for me and bringing so many smiles to my
face as I read the posting of so many wonderful trained noticers.I'm not nearly
as observant as most of you and really get a kick out of the details that you
share. The lists, poems, questions, and general sharing and discussions are why I
originally joined this group and a happy day it was for me.
My post about the picnic ham was supposed to have said that it would be hard to
swing a leg of HAM and I got all discombobulated and typed lamb.Guess I didn't
have my bucket on tight enough.Again, thanks for all the joy that sharing
Mayberry has given me. "sick as a dog but having the time of my life!"

Subject: Question On Andy's Autobiography
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I was doing some Christian book and music shopping over on a Christian book
website that I buy from. Although, I would buy this over at Weaver's, I am
confused by what I saw on Andy's pages of items available.
Christianbooks.com is listing Andy's book on cd "I Appreciate It" is set to
release on 2/15/04 but the actual book in print isn't set to release untill
9/15/04. Usually when books go to cd, the cd comes out after the printed book
is
released. Maybe one of these dates is a typo?
Can somebody that knows which is right, reply to this message? I want to
have my trigger finger all exercised to click my mouse over at Weaver's
whichever
date is correct.
Let's see there is one jar of pickles...two jars. Too bad Aunt Bee didn't
have a scanning system on these pickle jars.

Watched a whole bunch of the Twilight Zone marathon on Sci-Fi and almost
everyone I watched had a TAGS alumni on it. Simply amazing. My 5 fave tv
shows of all time (in no order) are: Twilight Zone (except for the 1963 1 hour
eps), TAGS (pre-color), Leave it to Beaver (before 1963), and The Simpsons
(except for season 1). All 5 of those shows have interchanged actors/guest
stars. (The 1970's Columbo re-runs are also up there, with a few TAGS alumni,
as well).
I noticed that at 9PM CST on Jan.1, TVLAnd showed rhe first TAGS episode. An
excellent way to start the new year.

ken, I love your observation as to where Thelma Lou works. When you stated
that she always wears a dress and therefore must have a position that requires
a
good presentation, I quickly remembered that all the women of that era looked
presentable in public. If my mother was going to the A&P she was dress as if
she were going out to dinner. This was the age before women wore slacks and
sweats in public. Sunday requirements were hats and white gloves.Gosh,Ken
thanks
for the memories.

I can think of two mysteries so far.
We don't know:
-What causes feet to fall asleep.
-How Ernest T. keeps breaking out of that cell.
Perhaps Ernest T. picked the lock. Or maybe one day he sneaked in the
courthouse and got a copy of the key. Probably unlikely, but it was just
a thought since they didn't keep a good eye on the keys.

The "last" episode that TV Land showed on New Year's Eve was actually the 241st
episode filmed, so the copyright date of 1967 is correct, even though it aired
on April 1, 1968.
Don't want to make a big moulage out of it.
