My sister invited me along on a Caribbean cruise with her & her husband. On
board everyday, they had a trivia contest in the morning & afternoon with each
team having 6 players. Having won the first day, we managed to get together
with that group as often as we could & won several times. There were 20
questions plus a bonus one which counted 2 points. Some were on geography,
sports & occasionally just general knowledge. I was so proud of myself for
knowing Uvula as an answer for one of the questions, from watching TAGS & I
could just hear in my mind old Barney talking about it.

1. Running - he won a medal and never took it off.
2. Selling flower seeds when he was a kid.
3. Singing of course - another Leonard Blush in the making
4. Dancing - especially in the salt-n-pepper (Just right for the dip)
5. Karate - he took lessons and tried to break a board once
6. Playing the harmonica
7. Making chili
8. Fishing - catching the big one and Cole Porter had that special effect on
Thelma Lou
9. Animal Talking -Winkin will tell Blinkin and Blinkin will tell Nod and
Nod will tell Barney
10. Voice Imitations - Opie Taylor Senior

These are just a few off hand. If I put a pail over my head and took a thank
I am sure I could come up with a lot more.

The Waltons show is also connected to TAGS in that the man who
played Grandpa Walton appeared in 2 episodes of Mayberry RFD, as
the sea captain who asked Aunt Bea to marry him. But before the
walk down the aisle, she realized he would never be happy on dry
land and set him free of the commitment. Speaking of which, is
there any evidence from the show(s) to suggest Aunt Bea was ever
married or engaged before?

Well what do you know? I was watching the 1944 movie The Thin Man Goes Home
and the art dealer was a Mr. Crump. That's C-R-U-M-P! I don't know if he was
from Kansas. I also think that one of the suspects (named Edgar Drake) was a
young Mr. Meldrim aka Harlan Fergus from the bank. I'm not sure about that,
though. Warren Parker played those roles and I kept thinking "Leon Ames" when
I saw Mr. Drake. I'm not even sure who Leon Ames is. That guy definitely
looked familiar to me. Anyone care to clarify this little matter? It's
preying on my mind. The movie didn't list credits. I'll try to do some
research, but I'm not too good at that sort of thing. I'm also feeling a
little down today and I remember Andy said when you feel that way you should
shoot for the good feeling by cleaning the garage. I don't want to do that and
I don't need the quarter anyway. I have a stiff neck and stomach ache so I
think I need me some of those pills from that lady druggist.

I did some sleuthing and discovered that Mr. Draque in The Thin Man Goes Home
was Leon Ames, as my subconscious was telling me. Now all I have to do is
figure out where I've seen Leon Ames. Perhaps on Perry Mason. Back to my
sleuthing.

Sorry for these rantings from Floor and Pool, but I figured out who Leon Ames
is (with the help of the inmd.) He was on Mr. Ed. I watch too much TV. Time
to go take one of those little pills. I'm still intrigued by the use of the
name Crump though. Now I'll shut up and let someone else talk.

In his wonderful book, "Mayberry 101", Neal Brower quotes the writer of
"Opie's Newspaper" Harvey Bullock as saying - "In junior high school, I wrote a
sports column with that exact awful name 'Pick-ups and Splashes From Floor and
Pool.' I remembered it while writing the script and knew such a cornball title
would fit Barney nicely." Mr. Bullock doesn't say how many time his column ran.

Just wanted to thank the folks of the Esquire Club for the good time they
showed us last Friday night. There was a real nice crowd for the event in
Cullman. Barney, Floyd, and Otis were really good (as usual) and kept busy
telling
jokes and posing for pictures and such. We were running late and missed the
trivia contest but we enjoyed the music, the food, the Opie contest and the
whistling contest. Y'all done good and we look forward to visiting you all
again
next time you have an event like this.

Here are some of Barney's talents;
    karate
Mr. fix it (he fixed the lamp with the broken neck)
sewing (he mended the blankets Otis chewed on)
    knitting (but don't tell anyone)
    outdoorsman
tracking web footed red crested lake loons
    quick draw
    understanding bird talk
memorization (the sheriff's handbook and the Constitution)
    harmonica playing
     playing the bongo drums
    singing (especially a cappella)
    extra sensitive perception
keeping up with meal time with the clock in his stomach

I'm sure there are more, but that's all I can think of now.

I thought of a few more things that Barney claimed he could do.
1. Building a snare to catch wild pheasants
2. Starting a fire by rubbing two sticks together
3. Subterfuge
4. Making and shooting a slingshot
5. Finding his way in a woods using Pioneer Moxie
6. Saying "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers
7. Draw his gun so fast it can't be photographed

I have to tell you what I saw at the Chicken Festival held in London, KY this
past fall. Part of the parade had a police car with people dressed (and
looked) like Andy and Barney; an old truck with people on it playing and
singing (like the Darlings); a car with the "Fun Girls" (they looked like them
and kept hollering for Bernie; and a car with Aunt Bee, Thelma Lou, and Helen
in it.

I didn't get to find out if it was a local club or where it was from, but you
ought to heard the cheering and hollering that went on when it came by. The
rest of the parade did not get the same cheers. It was almost like watching
TAGS in person.

I was wondering if there was anywhere you can purchase ALL of the shows on
"Season" DVD's; like the different DVD's out now...Friends; Simpsons, etc.
The DVD's that I have and the ones I have seen only have the most popular. I
really enjoy all of the episodes, not just certain ones. Don't you think this
would be a big seller/hit?
