Well, shoot, if we are not going to have a Mr. Schwaump tribute artist at
Mayberry of the Midwest, then I'm not going. Who's going to smile and nod?

From: Ralph A Baker <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hey, friends and neighbors! I'm a preacher doing some advance sermon
preparation, and I'd like to come up with a series of 5 or 6 messages
based on sayings from TAGS. I've already led 50 different Bible study
lessons based on full episodes, but my focus in this instance would be
those special sayings that carry a kernel of spiritual truth -- like
Barney's "Giraffes are selfish." or Andy's "But don't the trees seem nice
and full?" -- something I can illustrate with a short clip from the
show. If you have a favorite saying from TAGS that has touched your
spirit (and not just your funny bone), would you share it with me?
Please give me an episode reference just in case I don't recognize the
context of the saying. If you don't want to see the bulletin board get
too messy with these notes, you can e-mail me direct at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

"Yeah, boy!"

>Phil, Kenneth and the rest of the gang...as Mr. Schwump of course...

What fun would that be? He couldn't talk or do anything, like fish, catch
frogs, or play baseball, he'd be helpless. All he can do is stand or sit and
nod his head while grinning real big.......How about instead of Mr. Potato
Head contest, a Mr. Shwump contest, with different styles of wigs and grins?

I'm clearing a shelf on my bookcase for the new TAGS DVDs, and coating it
with a layer of gold plating, just in case that truck comes through.

Harriet, I kept my chickens inside for Easter - didn't want anyone thinking
they were bunnies.

I've wondered about something. In one episode Andy tells Aunt Bee he thinks he
will attend a "boiled dinner" at (I believe) the firehouse. I can imagine that
a boiled dinner is self explanatory, but does anyone know if this was a perhaps
a popular fund raiser at the time?

I love the idea of The Understudy. I believe someone else mentioned that an
episode on our favorite show also predated the idea of The Bachelor. No
telling how many shows on TV have their roots in TAGS.

About lady drivers, I don't think I ever saw Helen drive a car. The only time
I remember Thelma Lou driving was when she was steering Barney's car while
Opie, Aunt Bee, Andy and Gomer pushed.

A great source for discovering info on TAGS (and other) actors is the Internet
Movie Database (www.imdb.com).

For example, after reading Brad Cunningham's query about Danny Bonaduce
appearing on "Mayberry RFD," I searched for "Danny Bonaduce" on imdb.com and
found, under his TV credits:

1.. "Mayberry R.F.D." (1968) playing "Rick" in episode: "Mike's Birthday
Party" (episode # 2.6) 27 October 1969
2.. "Mayberry R.F.D." (1968) playing "Danny" in episode: "Goober and the
Telephone Girl" (episode # 2.4) 13 October 1969
3.. "Mayberry R.F.D." (1968) playing "Boy" in episode: "Emmett's Retirement"
(episode # 1.23) 10 March 1969

This is a valuable resource for the TV and film buff.

Makes ya thank, don't it?

I stalked out a nice article about "Mayberry" at

http://www.southernliving.com/southern/extras/southerners/article/0,13676,564405,00.html

If'n money's tight right now, I'd forgo Learn-a-Month and get this issue.

A big thank you to Curt & Karen Bell and all the people in New Castle, IN
that help organize Mayberry in the Midwest. I will not be able to attend
this summer, but last year I really enjoyed the event and recommend it to
everyone on the Digest. The whole weekend is extremely well organized and
everyone - guest stars and visitors - are well taken care of. New Castle has
the facilities for larger crowds, but you still get that small town feel of
Mayberry. I hope many of you will be able to attend this summer and have a
little extra fun for me.

Yes, that was definitely Danny on that "Mayberry RFD" episode.
