Subject: Aunt BEE
In addition to the banner when she was running for Council (Bee Taylor for
Council), you can also see the spelling of the name in the episode where Aunt
Bee opens the Chinese restaurant. The great big sign in front says "Aunt Bee's
Canton Palace."

Perhaps Aunt Bee's prized possession would be her rose - "Deep Pink Ecstasy,"
her mink coat, Aunt Martha's pin or her phot album of when she was growing
up...."That's me when I was 18 and my family moved to Peoria...."

Subject: 45 from Barney
Date: Mon, 17 May 2004 10:54:50 -0400
Dear Virgil,
You'll never guess what happened yesterday...you know, May 16,...the
day I joined the force..45 years ago...been in law enforcement ever
since...so this was my anniversary of joining the Mayberry Sheriff's Office
May 16...the day I started...it seems like only yesterday when Andy hired
me.
Well anyway you'll probably never guess, so I'll tell ya. They had a party
for me... Andy and everybody...right after Church..
Aunt Bee say's why don't you come over for lunch Barney, I went over to
Thelma Lou's and she was all ready..I should have suspected something then,
but we went over to Andy's...and there was a big sign in the yard. You'll
never guess what it said, right there in big bold letters...right in front
on Andy's porch, so's you could see it clear from the street...Can't
guess...they went to a lot of trouble...I couldn't believe they had a sign
that big.... Thel' just smiled when she saw it, and gave me a little peck.
I was so proud. Are you ready? It said 45.
Well we walked in and the front room was full of people and do you know what
they all said to surprise me?? "Surprise!" That's what it was...a
surprise, and that's what they said, "Surprise!" And Gomer just kept
saying "Surprise Surprise Surprise!" Until I told him not to say it any
more, because it was a surprise when I first walked in..but not 15 minutes
later when he was still sayin' it.
Anyway I don't know how they all knew about my anniversary...I only
mentioned to Andy and Aunt Bee this week, well and Thelma Lou. I might have
said something in the Barbershop to Floyd and Goober and them, but I didn't
say it like I thought they should do anything...so I was really surprised.
Aunt Bee had this big cake on it with gold lettering. You know what it said
"45" She also fixed a whole batch of Fried Chickin
We had a big dinner and then they all gave me gifts. I don't know how they
knew it was my anniversary with the force though...
The gifts all had to do with the number 45..it was really cute.
Thel gave me a gift certificate for 45 kisses....She called it a "45-kiss
salute!" I got kinda embarrassed when she gave me number 1 and 2 right there
in front of everybody.
Gomer gave me some 45-weight oil... what a hoot..don't he know that my car
only takes 30-weight. It looked like it had been opened anyway,
Chester and Jud gave me 45 checkers...they said I could only use 12 on my
side at a time though, ha ha
Andy and Helen got me some 45 records
Mr. Schwamp and a bunch of 'em got me 45 bottles of pop, mostly root beer.
You won't believe want Aunt Bee and Miss Clara made me though.....
They took this Sheriff's jacket..Andy must have got it somewhere, and sewed
45 stripes on each sleeve!!! I'm not kiddin' its runs all the way down to
my wrists..45 stripes!! Like I'm some kind of general or something!!
Well Virgil, this is getting long, so I'll tell you about the other gifts
later, but let me tell you this..
Friends, like those I have right 'shere in Mayberry are the greatest gifts a
fella can have.
It don't matter what you achieve in life, Virgil, if you have friends, you
are a wealthy man
There are no possessions on this earth as valuable as true friends
They can keep all that Gold in Fort Knox, 'cause for ole Barn I'm a rich
man with just what I've got here in little ole Mayberry...
And I don't have no fortune from orthopedic loafers neither, just my Deputy
salary and a few stocks and bonds, and buffalo nickels
For 45 years, it don't matter if I've done good, or messed up ( and believe
it or not, Virg, I have made my share of mistakes)
...my friends are always there to support me, encourage me, and cheer me up
no matter what ...and you know what?
I wouldn't trade that for anything
10-4,
Cousin Barney

I don't recall them being referred to as prized possessions, however here are
my guesses at some favorites.
Aunt Bee: the picture of her prize winning rose.
Barney: although he was sentimental about his father's rock, I believe his
steel blue persuader and bullit were the nearest things to his heart.
Ernest T. Bass: his educational diploma.
Thelma Lou: her fur stole, until it lost it's hair.
Howard: his ship in a bottle, as a reminder of his good life.
I think I'll put on my bucket and think on what my prized possession is.

Watched an old episode of Columbo with Jack Cassidy ("Publish or Perish", from
1974), which also starred Mickey Spillane. Jack Cassidy's butler was shown in
2 quick shots, and he was the bank president from TAGS. I Don't remember his
real or TAGS name, but it was definitely him. His performance wasn't
inspiring, but I guess mine wouldn't be either, if I had to go from Bank
President to butler.

I believe she would consider her brooch from Aunt Martha as a prized
possesion. Remember it was worth $250.00. Just consider for one moment how
easily the claim was made for a piece of lost property without an
investigation, but more importantly - without having to pay a deductible.
Who can afford homeowner's insurance with NO deductible??? Curious,
curious.............
