So, Neil, you need a town song. Have you talked to Floyd about writing one
for you?
"Hail to thee, Miss name-of-your-town, all hail all hail! All hail, all
hail. All hail, all hail."
On second thought, you can probably write it yourself.

Rats! Did I miss Opie's Charity? That, too, is my favorite. I love Stu
Erwin in his role and the priceless Poor Horatio dialog. I use that episode
in my TAGS Bible Study.

I always thought it would have been neat if Avery Schrieber could have been
on the show in some part and link up with Jack Burns to do a little of the
schtick their act was famous for when they were Burns & Schrieber. They
were funny.
For those of you not familiar with Burns and Schrieber, you'll have to take
my word for it. It's not the kind of thing you can describe although Jack
did do a little of it in a couple of episodes.

Subject: Andy Singing with Women
One of the best scenes ever where Andy sings with a woman is when he and Ellie
sing "Away in a Manger."
He sang with Mary Simpson, the nurse. He also sang with Ellie (I think or was
it Mary?) along with Barney and Thelma Lou when when they sang "Brining Nellie
Home." Barney had bongo drums.
If you count Charlene, he may have sung with her, although usually he just
played along with the boys when she sang. As for Helen, I think they sang
together in church but not a duet like with Peggy.
Surely there are others?

My five-year-old daughter called me on the phone yesterday to tell me that Andy
had won the poll for "Best TV Dad." She is a quick study, because when she
called she said she had something to tell me and - "It was Big!"

A hearty congratulations to Sheriff Andy for being voted as TV's no. 1
father. Some of their choices, however, had me scratching my head. I
can't comment on Ozzy O because I have never seen his show, nor do I
want to. Fred Sanford? He was always insulting Lamont calling him You
big dummy! Or George Jefferson who couldn't even respect his son's wife
enough to stop insulting her. Plus, I seem to remember an episode where
Lionel was so busy partying that he had no time to study so George
bought him a term paper. Is that good parenting? Where were Pa Ingalls,
John Walton or Pa Cartwright? Where was Eddie's father? I forget the
character's name but he always put Eddie first. I would have loved to
have spent the quality time with my father ther that Eddie had with his
at the beginnin of every episode. Or Steve Douglas of My 3 Sons? As a
father, Jim Anderson always knew best, didn't he?
Just my opinions.

Other than singing with Mary, the only ones I can come out with are when Andy
and Ellie sang "Away in a Manger" on the one and only Christmas episode and
when Andy and Thelma Lou's cousin Karen sang together.

In this week's 'T.V. Guide' on newstands now, they rank the all-time best
T.V. dads in lieu of Father's Day this Sunday. I found it interesting that
Ronny
Howard's two television dads, Andy Taylor and Howard Cunningham, were listed
as number 8 and number 9 respectively. Nonetheless, his REAL dad, Rance,
deserves the credit. He, after all, along with Jean, taught Opie to read. Ronny
couldn't read much in 1960 when the first season began. Rance's tutelage on the
set and at home helped him prepare for the shows. Heck, Ronny could barely
write
his name when he started signing autographs.

Regarding Andys duets, Ive always been partial to Away in a Manger
with Ellie (in the Christmas episode probably his first duet with a
female co-star?). And as for TV dads, none of us were surprised by #1
(granted, at least = of #10 was a shocker, and how did Homer Simpson
make the list?) but how did they miss Steve Douglas (Fred Mac Murray)
& Ben Cartwright (Lorne Green), who both had 3 sons?
My dad was a North Carolina native, and this will be the 6th Fathers
Day since he went to be with our heavenly Father I still, and always
will, miss him. He wasnt ever on TV, but he truly was the #1 dad!

I have been wondering. Where is all the memorabilia/stuff from TAGS (and
other long-time running shows) at? Such as the telephone in the sheriff's
office, the blue willow dishes, keys from the jail, the file cabinet and desk
from the jail, the actual squad car, etc. I could go on and on, but just
curious. Is there a museum (sure would be nice to have one) or is it still
stored on the set where filmed. Sure hope all this wasn't destroyed. Anyone
know?

>>>After watching Andy and Peggy singing a duet last nite I began wondering
how many different ladies Andy sang with. Didn't he sing with his date,
Mary? It seems to me that Helen never sang. Anyone remember some others
and did Helen ever sing on the show?
Andy sings a duet (Away in a Manger) with Ellie in "The Christmas Story" and
another duet (Down in the Valley) with Peggy in "Andy and Opie, Bachelors."
He sings "I Wish a Was a Red Rosy Bush" for Mary, but she doesn't join in.
This is the blonde Mary with no last name (played by Sue Ane Langdon), not
the dark-haired Mary Simpson (played by Julie Adams) who has trouble getting
Rafe to take his shot.
Helen has a beautiful contralto voice, which he hear only once, in "A Baby
in the House." She sings a lullaby and Andy accompanies her on the guitar.
It's a shame we didn't get to hear her sing more often.

Hah, good ole Cheerwine. When we were first in Myrtle Beach on vacation
a few years ago, we were wandering around a tourist area (Barefoot
Landing) that had an old fashioned general store thang. My wife was
shopping somewhere's else there. When she came back I was rockin' on the
porch (watch your foot...) and sipping a CheerWine - the look she gave
me!
She didn't know it was pop, thought I was plain guzzlin' way yonder
before noon, after she saw the WINE part. We don't have that stuff up in
Dee-Troit.
I think she was more upset cause I wouldn't share, hah!

Bee in New Concord, OH
I can remember one time when Helen sang. It was in the episode when Andy,
Helen, Howard and Andy's old girlfriend go to Andy's old girlfriend's
cabin.
Oh and don't you just love the end of Opie's Rival when Opie starts telling
Peggy that Andy needs the company of a fine young woman. I just love how
Andy changes the lyrics of the song.

I want to thank you folks for your positive responses
to my message about Alan Jackson's song Where Were
You. It's nice to know other people feel like I do.
I don't believe Andy and Helen ever sang a duet
together: I don't remember her signing in the choir
either. To me, one of the best performances on the
show was Eleanor Donahue and Andy singing Away In the
Manger on the Christmas show. To quote Charlene
Darling, "Aw Pa, that one makes me cry."

Dear Brad,
I read your post concerning your wanting to use "My Hometown" as your town's
theme song. This is a pretty song, and the episode has always been one of my
favorites. I remember watching this episode with my grandparents once.
Whenever I watch it now it brings back fond memories of sitting and watching
it with them.
You should look into any possible copyright ownerships by either the writer(s)
of the song, or by the company who now owns the rights to the "TAGS"
episodes.
Songs that have been written prior to January 1, 1978 have to be resubmitted
for copyright protection by the owner(s) each year. If the owner(s) have not
reapplied for copyright protection, the song becomes public domain and can be
used. As this song was written and used well before January 1, 1978, it could
very well be public domain by now.
All copyrights are processed by the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
They will research any songs and ownership of copyrights, I believe for a fee.
You can visit their web address at www.copyright.gov/.
Hope this information helps. Good Luck.
