Now I know this is kind of off topic, but just as Mayberry had
neighbours like Mt. Pilot & Siler City, TAGS has neighbours too. This
month one of those neighbours is Leave It To Beaver. Here is my
question: Last night's episode when Beaver was mowing the grass for
wally we saw June outside in pants weeding her flowers. Is this the only
episode where June Cleaver ever wore pants?
Also we were speaking a few digests back of Black people in mayberry. I
hope y'all noticed last night that there was a black woman standing
directly behind Barney as the various townspeople gave their version of
how Barney captured that escapee. She just stood there silently
listening & I can just imagine her going home to the black section of
town & repeating it all to her neighbors & friends.

I love Dave Barry's column, and as usual, yesterday's article was a hoot. It
was entitled "'Circle of life' different with turtles". It had a cute
reference about Barney Fife. Take a look.

I did hear Andy refer to hot dogs! It was in the color episode (can't
remember the name of it) where Opie went to camp with the rich boys and Andy
went to a social event with the boys' fathers. After Opie tells Andy what a
great time he's having "being himself", Andy relaxes and invites the fathers
over for a day of fishing. He makes reference to Aunt Bee fixing them some
lunch, "nothing fancy, just hot dogs".

Actually I think Opie mentions having eaten a large number of hot dogs (by
that name) at the picnic in the one where Ellie runs for city council.

Maybe the reason TV Land is only showing a single TAGS instead of two is
because they are adding so many new shows to their schedule.

Hey, I thought it was time we came up with a new way to teach our kids the
ABC's, so I wrote an original ABC's of Mayberry Poem. Please feel free to use

H is for Howard, whose upper lip he doesnt shave.
I is for the Indian Elixer, that gave Aunt Bee a buzz,
J is for old Jud, whose hair is but mere fuzz.

M is for Mr. Schwump, who is as quiet as can be,

The prisoner brought up a good point - Aunt Bee was not afraid to back down
from confrontation when it involved principle. She took on Andy several times
and was involved in politics when she felt it necessary ( starting with her
support of Ellie for Town Council ) .Yet, her reputation was for her compassion
and hospitality. She made everyone feel welcome in her home and prided herself
on her domestic skills ( pickles and marmalade not withstanding ), but she was
no shrinking violet when it came to her beliefs. I personally think she is a
fantastic role model. Sometimes people have referred to me as "Aunt Bee"
because I do like to pamper my guests ( especially children - who are often not
treated as specially as adults ) and I take it as a very high complement. I
sure
can't think of any tv character today that even comes close to Aunt Bee. How
fortunate we are to be able to keep Mayberry alive and continue to be inspired
by its citizens.

Subject: The WBMUTBB Rules
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I feel like with the number of new members we've gotten lately, and with the
discussion that's been going on, that it's time to restate "The Rules" for
everybody. You old-timers might want to read through this just to refresh your
memories and I think it's good for all of us to try and remember these tried
and
true rules.---- Allan
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hey Everybody,
Boy, things have really been growing here in out little corner of Mayberry!!
Because of that I think it's time to remind everyone what WBMUTBB is all
about:
We all know what Mayberry is about but do we realize why it is that we all
visit there everyday? I know that the characters are great but more than that,
they're friends. We "know" these people and it's just a joy to visit them
every chance we get to watch them as they work their way through getting locked
in a cell because the door "clangs shut" or any of the other wonderful
situations they face. Things always work out in a wonderful way leaving a
smile on
our faces.
Mayberry is an escape from the day-to-day trials we all face. A short trip
to a place where every body cares about one another and where we can forget,
for a while, the fact that "real life" isn't as much like that as we'd like.
I started WBMUTBB back in 1990, along with several other good folks, and
since then I've tried to make it as much like a "corner of Mayberry" as
possible.
I wanted this place to be somewhere folks could go and forget about the
outside world and relax by reading about Andy, Barney, Opie, Aunt Bee, and the
rest
of our Mayberry family.
To try and make that happen I've required everyone who wanted to join to tell
us a little about themselves so we could get to know them just a little bit.
After all, in Mayberry everyone knew everybody else and how can we have a
community without having at least some idea about our neighbors?
I've also had a couple of rules here and I try to enforce them.
Of course Rule #1 is...you guessed it...Obey all rules.
Rule #2 is this: Talk about the things you like about Mayberry..not things
you don't like.
I know some folks forget this second rule sometimes and they don't really
understand WHY I think Rule #2 is important so let me just give you an example.
Let's say I were to say, "Boy, I really hate Barney. I mean, look how stupid
he is and poor Andy has to put up with him." If I said that (and meant it)
what are the first things that happen to you?
First you'd feel like, "Man, that guys a jerk!" Then you'd get aggravated at
this guy talking about your Favorite character (and friend), Barney Fife.
Even if Barney's not your very favorite character, you'd likely be upset about
this guy talking about your neighbor.
I've never heard anyone say anything like that about Barn but I have about
other characters and folks forget that just because they don't like a
particular
character doesn't mean that character isn't someone elses favorite. You see,
if I talk about your favorite character saying negative things about 'em it
takes your fun away.
I think that's enough about Rule #2 and I hope you all understand the rule.
It's not to take away from your fun but to encourage you all to tell us about
what's fun to you and share your good feelings with others.
We have something special here. It's something you don't find often on the
internet. No "flames", no "fighting", no "foul language." We have a place
that children and adults can come and enjoy themselves.
Mayberry is a wonderful place and I'm just glad to be a part of this little
corner of it.
Your Friend and neighbor,
Allan Newsome

Subject: The WBMUTBB Rules - Hot Dogs, etc....
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
As a PS to "The Rules"
I would like to remind all of our members that I created the "Golden Door to
Good Fellowship" so that folks could talk about Off Topic things to their
hearts content. That means that if you would like to continue your discussion
of
Hot dogs or Cheerwine or any other "fun but not really Mayberry"
discussion...there is a place for it but it is not here on the Digest.
http://www.mayberry.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl
Please let me explain the reason for moving this off the Digest. The reason
is that folks signed up for a "Mayberry" mailing list....not a discussion about
hot dogs that goes on for DAYS. A mailing list is delivered directly into
your e-mail inbox and it is something you invite into your life based on the
topic of the list you subscribe to. If it's a Star Trek list...folks would
talk
about Star Trek on it...if it's about cooking, you expect a lot of "cooking"
talk....if it's a "Mayberry" list, you expect the discussion to focus mostly on
Mayberry, Andy Griffith or some other aspect that relates somewhat closely to
"Mayberry."
While "hot dogs" and Ben Matlock's eating of them is a topic that fits into
the "Mayberry related" catagory....in the words of Barney when talking to Otis
about the tomato..."I believe I've heard JUST about Enough about that Hot Dog"
is the quote that might come to mind for most readers of the Digest.
That does mean you have to stop discussion of the topic but it is time to
move it from here on the Digest to the Fellowship Hall over at the Golden Door.
THAT is the place for it and feel free to talk all you'd like about it there.
I have a responsibility as the person that runs this list to drag everybody
back toward the topic at hand when things don't self-correct. There are 1400+
people that read the Digest and I know I can't make everybody happy but we all
know the rules...they are very clearly stated fairly often so PLEASE respect
ALL the wonderful folks that have signed up for the Digest and keep our list
on topic while at the same time having a good time.
I feel like I let this on go a little toooooo far and didn't step in quite
fast enough. That's my fault and I'm sorry for that and I'm sorry if any
feelings have been hurt. That is NOT the intent at all...the intent is just to
have
wonderful conversation about Mayberry so lets try our best to do just that.
Thank you all for being a part of this GREAT list full of folks that love The
Andy Griffith Show and continue to be a very special part of Mayberry in my
life.

Subject: Jim Nabors at the American Music Theatre - Lancaster, PA
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I had the pleasure of taking in Jim Nabors' concert at the American Music
Theatre in Lancaster, Pennsylvania this past Saturday night July 10. I was one
of
the younger ones there. My brown hair stood out in the sea of silver. The
only other younger guy than me was a theatre employee who directed traffic in
the
parking lot. The show was a SELL-OUT! People came by the busloads.
Supposedly, this is to be one of Jim's last concerts. Jim said in a Lancaster
'New Era'
newspaper article " I enjoy performing but I don't like to travel, it's just
too hard." The heightened airport security has even affected our own Gomer.
"The last time I was traveling, they had me up against the wall with my shoes
off, running that thing over me and all these people were walking by saying
'Look, they got Gomer.' And then, after they were finished searching me they
asked
if they could have their picture taken with me. There's something really wrong
about that."
