Hi all,
Just my take on Aunt Bee and the choir robes, fromĀ theĀ  ladies' point of view.
Yes, it could have seemed she and the others were being a bit "pushy" but I can
just see it now. They had probably baked countless cakes and pies for charity
bake sales, raising funds for choir robes. Then at the last minute some more
"practical" use came forward and they gave in. Finally, here is a windfall of
sorts, unexpected money and enough for the robes. After all those
disappointments the ladies know there are always going to be "emergencies" and
they need to just stand their ground at this point. After all, the building
isn't going to topple over just because it leans a little bit, now is it? And
if the men put their minds to it they can figure something out. Just think of
the pressure from Sunday to Sunday, being sure the colors of your outfit don't
clash with the person standing next to you. The men might not think this could
throw one off key, but of course the
ladies can see how that could happen. You just can't sing the Lord's beautiful
music dressed any old which way. With robes it doesn't matter, everyone will
match. I think they reached the breaking point. Due to time constraints in the
program we don't see all the other times they had given in on getting the
robes. And didn't Clara do a great job modeling the one they wanted? And with
proper care, the robes will last for years. A very practical use of the money
when you stop to really think about it. Much better than that pool table idea!
So I don't think it was tooooo much out of character for the southern ladies to
finally stand up for what they wanted. That's just my opinion. Of course if you
grew up in the South you know all about those "Steel Magnolias" and what can
happen when they set their minds to something.
Ellen
