Interesting question. But for starters, there is no evidence that Andy Taylor ever served in the military. All we know, from two early episodes (Ellie Comes to Town and A Feud is a Feud) is that he was "over there [in France] during the war." It's safe to assume he meant WWII, and it's unlikely he was just there on vacation, but perhaps he was working as a journalist, a photographer, an entertainer (we know he's a talented musician), a missionary, or any number of other things. It's barely possible that for some reason he was visiting France during the Korean War, but I'll admit that's a stretch. Here's something to ponder: perhaps Opie's mother was French, and Andy brought her to Mayberry. Makes ya think!
