Do you suppose he sold vacuum cleaners? Brine tasted at the pickle factory? Worked for Mr. Weaver? Taught history (the shot heard 'round the world)? Maybe he went to the sheriff's academy right after the military. If he had been military police, that would have qualified him for the job and in a small town like Mayberry I don't think he would need to slap too many backs or kiss too many babies.
