One theme in TAGS that popped up ever so often was that of the females of
Mayberry entering the taboo areas of the men folk. Ellie broke into
politics by becoming the first female "councilman". Helen Brown broke the
barrier of the man's barbershop by working at Floyd's as a manicurist, and
Flora became the first female in Mayberry to work at a gas station. The
writers missed a golden opportunity to do likewise when Barney left
Mayberry. I wonder how the good folks of Mayberry would have reacted if
Andy would have gotten himself a female deputy, or deputyess as she might
have been called. And I wonder who that might have been. Do any of you
folks have any suggestions as to who would have made a good female deputy in
Mayberry? I thought about Lydia Crosswaite, but then she can't stand the
guitar or chit chat so that wouldn't have worked at all having to be around
Andy so much. Besides that her herpes would keep acting up whenever she
would have to be out in the sun.
