>>>I wonder how the good folks of Mayberry would have reacted if
Andy would have gotten himself a female deputy, or deputyess as she might
have been called. And I wonder who that might have been. Do any of you
folks have any suggestions as to who would have made a good female deputy in
Mayberry?<<<

My first thought was Ellie (the Pharmacy Gal) because she had a lot of spunk
and was not cowed by anyone. However, she was probably a little too
tenderhearted for that job. After all, she paid Ben Weaver's fine so he
wouldn't have to spend Christmas in jail, and she even caved in and gave Emma
Brand her sugar pills, even though she had no prescription.

Perhaps Helen Crump would be better suited to the job. She had a lot of spunk,
too, and you didn't want to mess with that gal when she was mad! Also, she
seemed less inclined to bend the rules than Ellie. And as a teacher, Helen had
lots of experience with "keeping the peace," at least in the classroom.

Now, Aunt Bee made a fine temporary warden ("Get to it!"), but I don't see her
as deputy material.
