One of the biggest differences between the folks from Mayberry and the folks
of today has to be there appearance. I am simply amazed as to how so many
people look today when they go out in public. Now I know it isn't how a
person looks that is important, but whether we like it or not, we are often
judged by our appearance. I was paid the highest compliment one day at work
this week. A customer commented about how clean cut and neat all the
employees at our supermarket looked. She said we looked like we came from
Mayberry. Now wasn't that something. Our store does have very strict
guidelines when it comes to dress. No tattoos can be visible, no body
piercing except for girls and they can only have a maximum of two earrings
in each ear. We cannot have any facial hair at all. (This one cost poor
Alice her job). We all have required shirts, shoes, and slacks we must
wear. And the wonderful thing about it is, no one complains. Everyone is
told about the code when they are interviewed. I always chuckle when I see
Opie put on his suit to go to the library or parties or when someone is
coming for supper. Mayor Stoner even wears a tie while fishing. I often
thought that Fred Goss must have the best business in town with all those
ladies wearing dresses all the time and then men wearing their suits for all
occasions. Why even Otis wears a coat and tie on Friday night when he goes
out to get a snootful. Well that's it folks, time for me to go trim my nose
and ear hair as that isn't allowed at the store either and I have to be
there in 30 minutes.
"Opie, you can't come to the breakfast table like a naked savage."
