Ken, I know what you mean about the way people dress.  Like you, I enjoy
looking at old pictures.  I've read several times that Andy Griffith's
intention was for Mayberry to have the feel of the 1930's.  Almost every 30's
and 40's era picture you see, the men are in suits with ties and hats and the
ladies are in dresses and many of them are wearing hats and some even wearing
gloves.  I guess that's just the way things were.  I love baseball and looking
at old photos of games of that era show just about every man in the stands
wearing a suit and tie.  Most games in that era were played in the afternoon,
so you know it had to be hot, hot, hot.  (I have even seen pictures of Calvin
Coolidge throwing out the first pitch for the Washington Senators wearing a
suit and tie.)

Like the people of Mayberry, I like to be dressed appropriately.  Personally, I
would never dream of going to church without a coat and tie.  These days I've
gone to church weddings and seen men in blue jeans and wearing baseball caps.
My niece is getting married this summer and I jokingly asked my brother-in-law
if her intended was going to get a new ball cap for the wedding. I've seen this
boy many times in the last 3 years and I've never seen the top of his head.  My
brother-in-law didn't laugh, he and my sister are really worried he might wear
one during the ceremony.

I guess these are just different times.  I liked the Mayberry days better.
