I had a very enjoyable day today as I did a 45 minute program at a school about 50 miles from here. I presented a Mayberry program for 75 kids ranging in age from 5-12. Not knowing the range of age I would be working with I chose to use the episodes "Keeper of the Flame" and "Opie's Medal" so I could talk about clubs, trespassing, and fire safety along with sportsmanship. I was amazed as to how captivated those little kids were. Most were somewhat familiar with TAGS but some had no idea why I was dressed as a policeman, so a lot of background explaining was done. They were really interested in hearing how my life as a child compared with their lives and the fact I do all my presentations in black and white video clips and slides in my PowerPoint seems to peak their interest even more. It was just a delightful day and the teachers were so thrilled with it and they openly admitted they did not know what to expect and didn't know how I would get the show down to their level. Could it be that I was able to do just that because I think on the same level as those kids do? I hope so. I even included a short video of my electric trains traveling through my two Hawthorne Mayberry Villages. This was the first time I was back working with kids in a teaching setting since I had to retire early seven years ago. Today's wonderful experience reminded me why I stayed in teaching for 36 years.
