Back in the '70's I occasionally wore a bow tie while teaching. It was called a "butterfly" tie because it was so large. It was a clip on type. The only other time I wore a bow tie was when I wore a black one when I got married in 1970 and that had a elastic band that went around your neck and clipped together on the back. We can't forget that Cousin Virgil also wore a bow tie and even Opie wore one when Malcolm got him all dressed up for dinner.
