After my last post I got to thinking about whether or not Andy and Opie were
ever involved in night crawler hunting at night. They sure did a lot of
fishing and they seemed to use worms for bait all the time. In all the
episodes in which they went fishing nothing was ever said about where they
got their worms. Now I know Andy carried a shovel in the trunk of the squad
car so maybe they used that to dig worms when they went fishing. But I have
a feeling they went out at night and got the big crawlers. That sure looked
like a big old crawler to me that Aunt Bee had hanging on her hook in the
very first episode. And I will bet anything those were big old crawlers
that Miss Peggy saw when she said, "Ick". Another way to get night crawlers
is to out on the streets after a very heavy rain during the night. For some
reason a good soaking causes a lot of night crawlers to come out of the
ground and you can find them all over the streets early in the morning. We
used to get a lot of good ones that way you.
