Having been an elementary teacher for 36 years I can understand how Miss Crump may have made a mistake in transposing her grades, but she made a far bigger mistake in not telling Andy about it herself. To simply call Opie up to her desk in front of all the other students and tell him he didn't get the A's was certainly not very compassionate nor professional of her. After all, Opie had done nothing wrong and he certainly should not have had to be the one to tell his father about it. I made a similar mistake once when I put a wrong grade on a report card. Somehow the cards got out of order and I put the wrong grade on one. Fortunately it wasn't such a drastic mistake as an F instead of an A. But when I noticed my mistake I immediately called the parents to apologize and explain now it had happened. They were very understanding. I like to believe that the real Helen Crump would not have done such a thing, but she had no control of the situation. After all she was being paid to follow the script. And besides that, she may have been under the influence of my friend the Count.
