I think today's Mayberry would still be a quiet, peaceful place to live but
with some definite changes. The courthouse would now be an Antiques Mall,
because a new County Complex was built outside of town to house all the
sheriffing duties. There's a Super WalMart (with full grocery store) out on the
highway where Morelli's used to be, with an adjacent strip mall housing the
ubiquitous Starbuck's, tan salon and nail salon. At the highway intersection is
a Speedway (that's the low-price, generic gas station in this part of the
country) with a combo Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin Robbins next door. Goober's Service
is still operating, but only for servicing. No pumps anymore. If the county is
still dry, there's a discount package liquor store on the other side of the
county line. And the Mayberry Union High building sits abandoned. Mayberry's
teens are now bussed to a consolidated high school in Mt. Pilot. A number of
vacant store fronts in downtown Mayberry,
because new businesses either aren't interested or can't make it when they do
move in. And more tenant farms in the surrounding area.
