Well, Miss Crump and I both come from Kansas, and I think you'll find that in 
Kansas, the name Crump has a lot of class.
 
Actually, from a writing standpoint, I guess the real reason for her 
unpleasant-sounding name was so that when Andy Taylor met her for the first 
time, he would be schocked. From the way Opie had described her, Andy must have 
been expecting an ugly old grouch. Perhaps through this experience, the 
audience 
was meant to learn something about judging people before we get to know them.
 
And BTW, she was not called Helen until six episodes later.  In that first 
episode (#86, Andy Discovers America), she was simply Miss Crump.  Also BTW, 
the 
title of that episode comes from an earlier comedy bit Andy Griffith used to do 
about Christopher Columbus.
