>>>It would seem more likely that Barney and Andy are not first cousins.<<<
Kim, I can't remember if I saw it in a TV interview or read it in a book, but the writer who came up with the bit about Barney being Andy's cousin (I'm thinking it was Everett Greenbaum?) said that this was just put in the script for the purpose of a one-time joke. In the first episode, Barney comes to Andy and tells him how grateful he is that Andy looked over all the available candidates and selected Barney because he felt he was the most qualified for the job (or something close to that) and then ends by saying, "And I want to thank you, Cousin Andy..." So it was intended to merely serve as the punch line to Barney's comments. As someone else already said, the cousin connection was only mentioned one more time early in the first season, and then it was dropped completely. I am not from the South, but I do understand that the term "cousin" is used a bit more freely there than in other parts of the country. Is that what you were trying to say?
