I think that in small towns everywhere folks tend to be related to one
another by marriage or former marriages or feel related due to deep-seated
friendships and relationships. They tend to call lots of folks cousin at
times of fondness or humor. At the tropical restaurant in Disney World's
Polynesian Resort, the host/hostess calls all of the guests "cousin" with a
big grin as they seat you and often the servers will address you this way
too. It's meant to be a friendly, comforting gesture. I sometimes wondered
if Andy and Barney were somewhat joking with one another since they were so
close and had been since early childhood. Just my 2 cents worth!
